1 Rome

An aerial view of the colosseum and surrounding city of Rome

First on the list of most romantic places in Italy had to be the capital… and how could it not be?! Rome has so much to offer. It’s a beautiful destination and easily one of the most romantic cities in Italy.

There are loads of key attractions in Rome so this is a romantic city break where you’ll have loads to see and do. Obviously it’s a brilliant choice if you love history and cultural sites, but there’s something for everyone in the Eternal City!

I particularly love that Rome is a super pretty destination with so much charm. You’ll be able to amble through the maze of streets, taking in the scenery and discovering beautiful piazzas.

Romantic things to do: Visit the Vatican City, make a wish at the Trevi Fountain, explore the history of the Colosseum, have aperitivo at Piazza Navona

Romantic Venice is one of the best destinations in Italy for couples

Venice is easily one of the most romantic destinations in Italy (if not the world)! I love this city and would go back again and again.

As a unique destination, Venice is undeniably pretty but it’s also bursting with history so there’s lots to take in. If you’re not visiting the main sites and museums, you’ll be able to spend your time admiring the historical architecture, the canals and the maze of old streets.

There are also plenty of fun and unique things to do in Venice so it’s a good option even if you’re worried about the crowds.

Juliet’s Balcony – where you can leave love letters – is one of the main attractions, but there are loads of other things to see and do too.

Florence’s charm makes it undeniably one of the most romantic places in Italy. It’s a city that’s filled with cute cobblestone streets and it’s a compact and walkable destination that’s perfect for finding hidden gems.

What I also love about Florence is its location. When you’re not marvelling at artistic masterpieces or taking in the main sites, you can do day trips from Florence to the romantic Tuscan countryside.

Throughout the city, you’ll find the perfect blend of history, culture and charm. You’ll also find that it’s a big enough destination to have plenty to do but it’s still compact and easy to explore.

One of my favourite things about Bologna is its incredible food scene. The city is home to classic dishes like tagliatelle al ragu (aka bolognese) and tortellini. You’ll also find some of Italy’s best local food markets as well as cosy trattorias that are perfect for a romantic meal.

Romantic things to do: Watch the sunset from Asinelli Tower, take a cooking class, find the city’s hidden canals

Parts of Matera are a UNESCO world heritage site and it’s a city that’s considered one of the most beautiful places in Italy. If you love history and soaking up the romance of a destination – this is the place for you! It’s a thoroughly unique city with cave dwellings, beautiful churches and a labyrinth of ancient streets.

Milan is often cast aside in favour of other Italian cities, but it’s still worth a visit. It feels like an underrated romantic city!

Milan is known for being a fashion capital, so it’s a cosmopolitan setting and one of the most stylish cities in Italy. But it’s also a city with a thriving culinary and art scene so fashion isn’t the only thing going for it.

There might not be as many ancient architectural gems as other Italian cities, but Milan still has romantic spots – like the Navigli canals and the cobbled streets in its Brera neighbourhood. Milan cathedral is also the largest in Italy and is incredibly beautiful. That alone makes it well worth a visit!!

San Marino’s capital is uniquely perched on the slopes of Mount Titano so it has the most enchanting views of the surrounding countryside. You’ll also find cute cobbled streets, historical buildings and charming piazzas.

Admittedly, there’s not as much to do in San Marino as some of the other places on this list. Most people visit on a day trip but it can still be worth an overnight stay. It’s a magical destination that feels even more idyllic after sunset!

If you want to visit all five villages (Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore) you can – it’s easy to get between them by train, boat or foot.

If you’re not sure which to base yourself in, my choice would be Riomaggiore or Manarola. Riomaggiore is known for being the most vibrant and buzzy. It has a younger vibe than the other villages so it’s a little more lively.
