Planning a Honeymoon in South Africa: A Step-by-Step Guide

A South Africa honeymoon is one of the most amazing trips you can take. It’s my favourite kind of honeymoon because it combines adventure, luxury and nature in a way that few destinations can match.

That said, planning a honeymoon in South Africa can be one of the most overwhelming options!

Unlike a traditional beach honeymoon where you simply choose a resort and book your flights, planning a South Africa honeymoon involves a series of decisions. 

Which safari reserve should you choose? How many nights do you need? When should you visit? How do you combine a safari with Cape Town or the beach?

As someone who has personally visited South Africa and plans luxury holidays for a living, I’ve found that most couples aren’t short of inspiration. What they’re looking for is clarity!

So if that’s you and you need help planning your South Africa honeymoon – this post will help you out! Keep reading and I’ll guide you through exactly how to plan a South Africa honeymoon step by step.

Step 1: Decide what kind of honeymoon you want

Before you start researching safari lodges or comparing prices, take a step back and think about what you want your honeymoon to feel like.

This might sound obvious, but it’s one of the biggest mistakes couples make when South Africa honeymoon planning.

Many people begin by searching for “best safari lodge in South Africa” and find themselves overwhelmed by hundreds of options.

There are luxury tented camps, private game reserves, Big Five safaris, malaria-free reserves, all-inclusive lodges, boutique properties – the choices seem endless.

But there isn’t one perfect South Africa honeymoon for everyone!

For some couples, the dream is seeing as much wildlife as possible. They’re happy to wake up before sunrise every morning if it means spotting lions, leopards and elephants.

For others, luxury is just as important as wildlife viewing. They want private plunge pools, spa treatments, outdoor baths and beautifully designed suites.

Then there are couples who want a balance of everything: incredible wildlife experiences, luxurious accommodation, plenty of relaxation time and a few unforgettable bucket-list moments along the way.

These couples are often just as excited by the other elements (like Cape Town and the Garden Route) as they are by the safari!

Before you move any further with planning your honeymoon in South Africa, it’s worth thinking about the following:

• Is seeing the Big Five your top priority?
• Do you want a safari-only honeymoon or multiple destinations?
• How important is luxury accommodation?
• Do you prefer adventure or relaxation?
• Is this your first safari experience?
• Are you happy taking malaria precautions if it means accessing the best wildlife viewing?

Having clear answers to these questions will make every decision that follows much easier!

Step 2: Confirm when you can visit South Africa

One of the biggest advantages of South Africa is that there is no single “perfect” time to visit. However, the time of year that you choose to visit will hugely impact your itinerary (as well as your costings). 

Unlike some safari destinations that have defined seasons, South Africa has great experiences throughout much of the year. That said, the best time for your honeymoon depends on what you’re looking to prioritise.

May to September: Peak safari season

If wildlife viewing is your main reason for visiting South Africa, winter is considered the best time to travel.

During this dry season, vegetation becomes thinner and water sources become more limited. As a result, animals are easier to spot because they’re concentrated around rivers and watering holes.

Game drives during these months can be incredible. The weather is also comfortable, with warm sunny afternoons and relatively little rainfall.

Just bear in mind that mornings can be very cold at this time of year. Early game drives often begin before sunrise and temperatures can be super chilly, particularly in June and July! This caught me off guard on my first safari and that was during the summer months!

October to April: Green Season

If you visit South Africa during their summer, the landscapes become greener and the bush feels more vibrant after seasonal rainfall.

This time of year is a really good option if you want a multi-centre honeymoon across South Africa. 

Cape Town has some of its best weather between November and March, so if your dream honeymoon includes a safari as well as beach days and wine tasting, these months can work brilliantly.

Depending on where you go, wildlife can sometimes be slightly harder to spot during the green season due to thicker vegetation, but game viewing is still excellent in many areas. Likewise, malaria risk is higher during the rainy season in regions like Kruger.

It depends on where you go within South Africa, but generally, shoulder seasons such as May, September and October are a good bet. These months offer the perfect balance between good safari conditions, comfortable temperatures and fewer crowds.

Step 3: Finalise your South Africa honeymoon budget

One of the reasons South Africa is such a popular honeymoon destination is that it is brilliant value compared to many other luxury safari destinations!

That said, it will still be a significant investment (especially if you’re combining multiple destinations and staying in luxury accommodation). BUT, compared to Tanzania, Kenya or Botswana, South Africa will give you a genuinely high-end experience for much less money.

The safari part of a South Africa honeymoon will be the most expensive element, but keep in mind that safari pricing works differently to a traditional holiday. Typically, your rate will cover:

• Accommodation
• All meals
• Two game drives per day
• Drinks (sometimes including premium beverages)
• Guided bush walks
• Transfers within the reserve

For most couples planning a luxury South Africa honeymoon, I recommend budgeting somewhere between £10,000 and £25,000 depending on the length of your trip, the time of year and the standard of accommodation you choose.

A honeymoon around the £10,000-£15,000 mark can still be an incredible experience, particularly if you’re travelling during shoulder season and choosing mid-luxury lodges rather than ultra-exclusive properties.

If your budget stretches beyond £20,000, you’ll have access to some of South Africa’s most sought-after safari lodges, premium room categories and longer multi-stop itineraries.

Step 4: Decide if you’re adding extensions to your itinerary

Most couples don’t just go on safari on their honeymoon – they usually combine a safari with another element.

One of the biggest reasons why South Africa is such a popular honeymoon destination is because it works so well with several other experiences.

You could spend mornings tracking wildlife on safari, afternoons wine tasting in the Cape Winelands and your final few days relaxing on a tropical beach.

This is why South Africa is one of my favourite destinations!

But because there are lots of choices, you need to know what you want to do before you get into the booking process.

The key is deciding what kind of honeymoon experience you’re hoping to create. Once you’re clear on that, it becomes much easier to decide which destinations deserve a place in your itinerary.

Think about the overall flow of your trip

One mistake I see people make is choosing destinations individually rather than thinking about the entire itinerary.

All the elements of your itinerary need to work together. 

For example, if you’re dreaming of a bucket list Big Five safari in the Kruger region during peak season, it might not be best to combine it with Cape Town or beaches when it will be rainy and colder along the coast.

Likewise, if you decide you want to rent a car and drive along the Garden Route, you may decide it’s logistically easier to go on a safari in the Eastern Cape, rather than flying on to another safari region.

The strongest South African honeymoons aren’t necessarily the ones with the most destinations. They’re the ones where each part of the trip complements the next.

Possible combinations:

✔️ Cape Town / Cape Winelands + Greater Kruger safari
✔️ Cape Town, Garden Route + Eastern Cape safari
✔️ Cape Town, safari + Mauritius extension

Step 5: Choose the right safari destination

Once you have an idea of what you want your South Africa itinerary to look like, it’s time to narrow down your safari destinations. 

Many honeymooners assume that Kruger National Park is the only place to safari in South Africa. 

This isn’t the case! 

There are several safari regions across South Africa and each offers a different experience. Choosing the right one will play a big part in how your honeymoon will feel.

Once you have decided on your honeymoon budget, this will also help you narrow down where you can realistically safari in South Africa.

Greater Kruger: The classic luxury safari choice

If you’re dreaming of a classic, luxury honeymoon experience Greater Kruger is an amazing safari destination to choose in South Africa.

This safari region includes a collection of private reserves bordering Kruger National Park. It’s one of the country’s best-known safari areas and it’s where you’ll find some of Africa’s most luxurious lodges.

Because there are no fences between these private game reserves and Kruger, wildlife moves freely across an enormous area. This creates some of the best game viewing opportunities.

The region is also famous for leopard sightings, which are often considered one of the most challenging animals to spot in the wild!

Keep in mind that Greater Kruger reserves are often the most expensive safari options in South Africa.

If your budget allows for it, I absolutely recommend checking out Sabi Sands in Greater Kruger. It’s widely regarded as one of Africa’s most exclusive safari destinations – if you’re after a once-in-a-lifetime honeymoon experience, Sabi Sands is it!

Eastern Cape Reserves: The best choice for a combination honeymoon

The Eastern Cape is a little more overlooked, but it’s home to some incredible private game reserves.

It’s also a brilliant destination for a South Africa honeymoon if you want to combine your safari with Cape Town and the Garden Route.

I’ve personally been on safari in the Eastern Cape and it was fantastic. Especially if you are a first time safari goer, it offers a brilliant combination of ease, luxury and bucket list experiences.

Because of the location, the logistics of planning an Eastern Cape safari can be simpler, travel times are shorter and many reserves are malaria-free.

The Eastern Cape is generally more affordable than other regions, too, while still offering mid-high luxury. It’s also one of the best places for a year-round safari.

Which safari destination is best for honeymooners?

If you’re looking for the classic luxury safari experience, Greater Kruger can often feel like more of a bucket list option.

The combination of wildlife viewing, luxury lodges and honeymoon-worthy experiences is hard to beat.

That said, there isn’t a universal right answer.

The best safari destination is the one that matches your priorities, budget and overall honeymoon vision! If you pick the Eastern Cape, it will still be an incredible honeymoon and can often make more sense within a full itinerary.

Step 6: Decide how many safari nights you want

Once you know where you want to go on safari, you can think about how long you want to spend there.

Many first-time safari travellers assume they need to spend a week or more on safari.

That’s actually not the case.

For most couples, three to five nights is perfect. 

A three-night stay is generally enough time to experience a good variety of wildlife and settle into the rhythm of safari life.

However, if your budget allows it, four nights is my recommendation. It will give you enough time to enjoy multiple game drives without feeling rushed, while also allowing for some downtime between activities.

It creates space to relax by the pool, enjoy your lodge and soak up the atmosphere rather than treating your safari like a checklist.

If you have time for five nights, it can be a brilliant choice if you’re wildlife enthusiasts or staying in larger reserves. But if you spend any longer than that, you might start craving a change of scenery! 

Rather than spending ten nights in a safari lodge, most couples choose a more balanced itinerary that combines a safari with Cape Town, the Winelands or a beach destination.

Step 7: Choose your safari lodge

At this stage, you know your budget, you know how long you want to stay on safari – and you know if you’re combining any other extras into your itinerary. So now you can get down to more detail and begin deciding on your lodge!

Choosing a lodge is where many honeymooners find themselves spending hours comparing properties that all seem equally impressive.

When looking at safari lodges online, it’s important to remember that you’re not just booking accommodation. You’re booking an entire experience!

It sounds obvious, but wildlife viewing should always be one of the first things you consider. A stunning suite means very little if the safari experience doesn’t meet your expectations… 

I totally get that honeymooners want gorgeous accommodation though, too. Private plunge pools, outdoor showers, standalone suites and secluded decks can all make your experience more romantic.

Step 8: Book your honeymoon package early

The safari part of your South Africa honeymoon is the bit you want to secure first. This is because the best safari lodges in South Africa book up much earlier than people expect.

So if you’re travelling during peak safari season or immediately after your wedding, I recommend booking as far in advance as possible.

Most safari lodges are small and have a limited number of suites, and the best room categories are often the first to sell out. Because of this, it’s best to book around a year in advance with safari honeymoons. 

This will give you access to the widest selection of lodges, room categories and flight options.

If you’ve found a honeymoon that matches everything that you want and you’re happy with the price – I always recommend getting it booked ASAP. There’s no point waiting because prices will only increase or availability will sell out.

Sample itineraries to help you plan

One of the reasons why South Africa works so well for honeymooners is the variety of experiences you can combine within a single trip.

For couples with around ten nights on honeymoon, a classic combination of Cape Town / Cape Winelands and a safari works perfectly.

You could spend five nights exploring Cape Town and the surrounding Winelands before flying to a different region for four nights on safari.

If you have two weeks available, you could add a beach extension. My favourite itinerary is five nights in Cape Town, three or four nights on safari, followed by five nights in Mauritius.

If you have time for a longer trip, you could also consider adding the Garden Route between Cape Town and the Eastern Cape. This is a brilliant way to add more adventure and variety!

The beauty of South Africa is that there isn’t one perfect itinerary. There are so many choices, which means you can create the perfect honeymoon for you both.

How to build your ideal South Africa honeymoon

If you’re still deciding what your itinerary should look like, I’d start by thinking about what matters most to you as a couple.

If wildlife is your top priority:

Choose Greater Kruger or Sabi Sands and spend 4–5 nights on safari.

This is the best option if you’ve always dreamed of seeing the Big Five and want the strongest possible wildlife experience. Rather than splitting your time across multiple reserves, focus on one exceptional safari stay.

If luxury and romance are the priority:

Choose a high-end safari lodge in Sabi Sands and pair it with Cape Town and the Cape Winelands.

This combination will give you incredible wildlife, beautiful accommodation and plenty of romantic experiences, from wine tasting in the Cape Winelands to private safari dinners under the stars.

If relaxation is a major priority:

Add a beach extension in Mauritius after your safari.

A classic 4-night safari followed by 5–7 nights at a beach resort is an amazing choice if you want adventure and downtime. It’s what most honeymooners are looking for!

If you have around 10 nights:

Keep it simple with 5 nights in Cape Town + 3-4 nights on safari (+ travel days).

This is one of the most popular honeymoon structures because it gives you two completely different experiences without feeling rushed.

If you have 14 nights or more:

Add a third destination such as Mauritius or the Garden Route.

With two weeks, you’ll have time to enjoy a safari, Cape Town and a beach escape without turning the trip into a constant sequence of flights and transfers.

If you’re tempted to add destinations:

Keep it intentional! 

South Africa is amazing for a multi-centre honeymoon, but that doesn’t mean you need to include every destination that catches your eye.

The best itinerary will be built around two or three experiences that complement each other well.

Before adding another stop, ask yourself whether it’s bringing something genuinely different to the trip. If the answer is yes, it’s probably worth considering. If not, you might be better off spending an extra night somewhere you’ll have more time to enjoy.
