Are you thinking of choosing South Africa for your safari honeymoon? I don’t blame you! As a travel agent, I’ve spoken to countless couples about this incredible destination – it’s one of our top-selling choices!

If you want a once-in-a-lifetime, luxury honeymoon I can’t recommend South Africa enough. South Africa has it all with private game reserves, five-star lodges, and curated wildlife experiences.

Prices can vary a lot in South Africa depending on lodge choice, itinerary and when you want to travel. But in my opinion, investing in a high-end safari honeymoon will give you the most unforgettable, seamless adventure.

Understanding how much a South Africa safari honeymoon costs helps you plan a memorable trip without surprise. In this guide, I’ll break down realistic luxury safari honeymoon costs, what’s included, and tips to plan your dream honeymoon with confidence.

How much does a South Africa safari honeymoon cost?

  • Mid-luxury lodges: £800–£1,200 per night per couple (~$1,000–$1,600 USD)
  • Luxury lodges: £1,200–£2,500+ per night (~$1,600–$3,400+ USD)
  • Ultra-luxury lodges: £2,500+ per night (~$3,400+ USD)
  • Full 10-day itineraries typically range £12,000–£25,000+ depending on lodge tier, extras, and destinations included.

What’s usually included?

  • Private game drives with expert rangers
  • Five-star or boutique accommodation
  • Full board meals
  • Internal flights and transfers between lodges/cities

Is Cape Town included in a safari honeymoon?

As a travel agent, I always like to pair a luxury safari honeymoon in South Africa with Cape Town and/or the Winelands for the best mix of adventure and relaxation.

Do you need internal flights?

You will need flights from Cape Town to your chosen game reserve, as well as private transfers to lodges.

When should you book a South African safari?

I recommend booking at least 9–12 months in advance, especially for peak season or small, exclusive lodges.

When’s the best time to go?

May–October (dry season) offers excellent wildlife sightings. November–April (green season) provides lush landscapes, fewer crowds, and newborn wildlife!

How safari honeymoon pricing works

Honeymoon safari costs can vary widely depending on the destination, the type of lodge, the season, and the itinerary length. It’s definitely possible to find options across a range of budgets, but the key is knowing what’s typically included and how to plan smartly. Here’s what generally drives costs:

Accommodation type

Lodge choice is the biggest factor in cost. Prices range from mid-tier private game lodges to ultra-luxury villas with personal guides. Even mid-range lodges typically include meals and daily game drives, while high-end resorts add exclusive experiences and personalised service.

Even at mid-luxury levels, you’ll still get an intimate, high-quality experience – it just won’t have the full ultra-luxury touches.

Game drives & guides

Most lodges include at least two daily game drives. In higher end resorts, you often get private guides and vehicles, which are more expensive, but elevate the experience. You’ll get insider knowledge, personalised itineraries and more memorable encounters with wildlife.

Meals & drinks

Full-board and all-inclusive meals are standard in most lodges. Luxury packages often include premium drinks and private dining experiences, allowing you to toast your honeymoon in style.

Transfers & logistics

Internal flights between destinations, private transfers, and airport pickups add to the overall price but remove the stress of navigating logistics.

This is so important for honeymooners, as seamless transitions between Cape Town, the Winelands, and safari lodges make the trip feel a lot more effortless. No one wants travel faff on a luxury honeymoon!

Seasonality

Peak season brings higher rates but it’s the best time for wildlife viewing. However, shoulder season offers similar experiences at slightly lower costs, with the added bonus of fewer crowds! Some ultra-luxury lodges have premium rates year-round, but planning off-peak can give you better flexibility.

Optional extras

It’s always possible to add things like spa treatments, romantic dinners, helicopter flights, or beach extensions to your honeymoon. Even when sticking to a mid-luxury budget, a few carefully chosen extras massively elevate the experience.

🌟 Mid-luxury sweet spot: £12k–£20k per couple (approx. $15k–$25k USD)

  • 3–4 nights in a private game reserve lodge
  • 4 nights in Cape Town in a central hotel
  • 2–3 nights in a Winelands boutique hotel
  • Internal flights and private transfers included
  • Optional experiences: guided bush walks, private dinners, wine tastings

🌟 Ultra-luxury: £25k–£40k+ per couple (approx. $30k–$50k USD)

  • As above but with ultra-exclusive accommodation, lodges or private villas
  • Helicopter transfers or scenic flights
  • Spa treatments, curated romantic experiences, and private dining in the bush
  • Extended itineraries with beach extensions (like Mauritius or Seychelles)

Even at the luxury sweet spot, you’ll still enjoy premium accommodation, incredible game drives, and curated experiences that feel completely seamless. If you’re after ultra-luxury, this is when you can add exclusive touches that elevate the honeymoon to the ultimate once-in-a-lifetime trip.

What’s usually included in a luxury safari honeymoon?

Luxury safari lodge packages are designed to remove stress and maximise experience, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the adventure. Most include twice-daily game drives with expert rangers. This is the most valuable part of any safari booking – it means you’ll get close to wildlife safely while benefiting from local knowledge.

Accommodation is typically 5-star lodges within exclusive reserves, offering privacy, comfort and breathtaking views. Meals are usually all-inclusive, with premium options and private dining available at some higher-end lodges.

Whenever I make a safari booking, I always include airport pickups, transfers and any internal flights so it’s easy and seamless to move between destinations.

You’ll also find within luxury packages that you can add optional extras like spa treatments, private candlelit dinners, guided walking safaris or helicopter rides.

Cost per night expectations for a South Africa safari

To help you visualise how a South Africa safari honeymoon budget adds up, it’s useful to break costs down by nightly rates at different lodge tiers. Hopefully this gives you a clear sense of what you’re paying for and helps you plan your itinerary more confidently!

  • Mid-luxury lodge: £800-£1,200 per night (~$1,000–$1,600 USD)
These lodges provide game drives, comfortable accommodation and excellent service. They may have fewer exclusive extras or slightly smaller suites, but still offer an intimate, high-quality experience.

  • Luxury lodge: £1,200–£2,500+ per night (~$1,600–$3,400+ USD)
At this level, you’ll enjoy spacious suites, highly personalised service, gourmet meals, and optional romantic touches like private dinners or guided bush walks.  This tier is perfect for couples wanting classic safari luxury with a few bespoke experiences included.

  • Ultra-luxury villa or private lodge: £2,500+ per night (~$3,400+ USD)
Ultra-luxury properties include private guides and vehicles, exclusive villas with spectacular views, helicopter transfers, and bespoke experiences curated for honeymooners. This is for couples seeking the ultimate, fully personalised safari escape!

Cost variations by region in South Africa

South Africa offers incredible safari experiences almost everywhere, but costs can vary depending on the region and reserve you choose.

  • Sabi Sands: This collection of private game reserves near the border of Kruger National Park in Greater Kruger is known for its exclusive lodges so rates tend to be higher. Expect luxury lodges to start around £1,500–£2,500+ per couple per night. This area is perfect for couples seeking privacy, premium service, and the classic bucket list safari.

  • Kruger region (private reserves): Kruger offers a range of luxury and mid-luxury options. Rates are slightly lower on average than Sabi Sands, making it a good balance between quality and value.

  • Eastern Cape: The Eastern Cape is where I went on my first South African safari. It’s emerging as a honeymoon favourite because lodges here are often slightly cheaper (£800–£1,500 per couple) while still offering incredible game drives and five-star service. It’s also a region that’s less affected by traditional safari seasonality and is ideal for first-time safari couples or those wanting a more flexible itinerary.

I’ve written a full guide to the best safari destinations in South Africa – it’s worth checking it out if you’re in the early stages of planning and don’t know yet where you want to go! 🇿🇦

A 10-day safari honeymoon typically costs £12,000–£20,000 per couple (approx. $15,000–$25,000 USD) for a mid-luxury itinerary. This budget covers a combination of private game reserves, boutique city stays and curated experiences.

Usually, I suggest that couples spend around 3 nights in Cape Town before they go on safari in South Africa. Cape Town has one of the country’s main international airports so it’s a good starting point, and the city is so worth exploring!

I recommend staying in a well-located hotel in Cape Town (somewhere like the Waterfront). Part of this is due to safety, but it also means that lots will be close by and you’ll get a better luxury experience.

You can expect to pay £300+ per night for a 4-star hotel in Cape Town, £500+ for a five-star.

While you’re in this part of South Africa, you should also visit the gorgeous Winelands. It’s non-negotiable in my opinion!! You’ll be able to stay in a boutique hotel or luxury resort surrounded by beautiful countryside.

Hotels here range from around £350 to £1,000+ per night for iconic places like Mont Rochelle.

From there, you’ll then need to take an internal flight to get to your chosen game reserve

There are lots of choices of where you can safari in South Africa. I worked as a conservation volunteer at a game reserve in the Eastern Cape, but you could also head to Kruger National Park and the reserves in that region.

You’ll want 3-4 nights in a private game reserve lodge, where you’ll get twice-daily game drives guided by expert rangers. If you want the quintessential safari experience, you don’t want to skimp here! It’s the perfect way to get that classic honeymoon experience!

The safari lodges are where you’ll find the biggest costs in your trip. There’s a focus on luxury and exclusivity at these lodges, so you’ll pay accordingly. You can expect prices to start at £900 per night (often it’s more – see above!).

You’ll also need to factor in your international flights, internal flights, and transfers. International flights alone can cost £2,000+ per couple from London to Cape Town. Then, there are the extras you want to experience to make it next level – think things like private dining, helicopter rides and spa treatments.

ComponentEstimated Cost (per couple)
3 nights Cape Town£1,500
2 nights Cape Winelands£2,000
3-4 nights Private Game Reserve£4,000
Internal flights + transfers£1,000
International flights£2,000
Luxury extras£1,500
Total£12,000

Optional: You could add a 4-5 night Mauritius extension for an additional £3–£5k+ for the ultimate beach + safari balance

Factors affecting luxury safari costs

  • Seasonality: Peak season = higher rates; shoulder season can offer better value without sacrificing experience

  • Lodge exclusivity: Private use or ultra-luxury lodges cost more

  • Length of stay: Longer itineraries naturally increase your costs

  • Optional upgrades: Helicopter transfers, private guides and romantic extras add to the budget

  • Itinerary add-ons: Beach extensions or multi-country stays affect the final cost

Book your safari early:

One of the most important steps when planning your dream safari honeymoon is to book early! The best private safari lodges are small and fill up months in advance, especially during peak season. To get the best options, you want to start planning 9–12 months before you plan to go.

Consider the timing:

Peak season offers the best wildlife sightings but it comes with higher prices and a lot more crowds. I recommend shoulder season as a brilliant time to travel when it’s quieter and you can make the most of better rates.

You’ll also want to consider where you want to safari in South Africa because the climate is different in different regions. For this reason, I generally prefer to safari in the Eastern Cape rather than Kruger, as the Eastern Cape is more of a year-round destination and works well with the best times to visit Cape Town.

Combine adventure + relaxation:

You don’t really need more than 4 nights on safari at a game reserve so it’s always nice to combine the trip with something else like Cape Town or a beach extension. This means you get more bucket list experiences in one dream trip.

The most common itinerary I’ve seen couples asking for is the safari + beach combination. Combining South Africa and Mauritius is my favourite choice because you’ll get to relax on white sands after more active and adventurous days on safari!

Focus on experiences over nights:

I’d much rather stay a few nights in an extra special, luxury hotel, than more nights in somewhere mediocre.. Premium, five star lodges are where it’s at if you want the best safari experience.

Plan with a travel consultant:

Of course I’m biased because this is my job, but a complex itinerary like a South African honeymoon needs to be done right. We have access to the best deals, we can tailor everything to you and we can make the entire process seamless!

This not only saves you time in planning, but it also ensures your honeymoon feels effortless and truly personalised.

Is a South African safari honeymoon worth it?

I’m obsessed with South Africa as a destination and it’s truly one of my favourite choices for a safari honeymoon. Especially if you combine a safari with Cape Town or with a beach extension – it’s a dream mix for a bucket list break!

A luxury South Africa safari honeymoon is a once-in-a-lifetime investment so in my opinion, it is well worth the splurge to get it right.

While mid-budget options exist, a proper mid-luxury experience usually starts around £12–15k. With ultra-luxury itineraries, you can expect anything from £25K+. For a once-in-a-lifetime honeymoon, it’s an investment well worth making.

So is a South Africa honeymoon worth it? Absolutely!

Whether you choose a more streamlined itinerary or a deluxe safari + beach combination, South Africa will give you unforgettable memories in some of the world’s most beautiful landscapes.

It’s no wonder why so many people are choosing this for their honeymoon!! I hope this helps you plan your dream trip to South Africa and gets the ball rolling on the honeymoon booking process.
