Best Luxury South Africa and Mauritius Honeymoon Itinerary

Planning a South Africa and Mauritius honeymoon and not sure how to structure it? You’re definitely not alone!

This is one of my absolute favourite honeymoon combinations. It blends bucket list safari experiences, world-class food and wine, and a luxury beach escape – all into one trip that feels varied and well-paced.

A lot of couples assume a trip like this will be complicated or difficult to plan.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through exactly how to structure it so it all makes sense! I share two tried-and-tested itineraries, when to go, realistic costs, and everything you need to feel confident booking a once-in-a-lifetime honeymoon.

Why choose a South Africa and Mauritius honeymoon?

As a travel agent, I regularly recommend a South Africa and Mauritius honeymoon to clients because it just makes sense!

Firstly, you can fly directly from South Africa to Mauritius, which makes the logistics far easier than some other multi-stop honeymoons.

And compared to alternatives like Tanzania and Zanzibar, it’s often better value while still delivering that once-in-a-lifetime experience.

You’re still getting incredible wildlife, luxury lodges, and a tropical island… just in a way that’s often more accessible.

From a planning perspective, this itinerary also works beautifully because South Africa offers so much variety. It’s one of the few destinations that genuinely works for all types of couples – especially if you have slightly different travel styles!

Whether you’re into wine, wildlife, cities, beaches or road trips – this itinerary manages to tick all of those boxes.

I’ve planned and booked this combination so many times, and it’s one that clients consistently come back raving about. One of my recent honeymoon clients said the entire trip was magical!

It really does strike that balance between experience and relaxation 😍

There isn’t just one way to do this trip. Below are two of the best itinerary structures depending on how much time you have and how much you want to see.

A view across the city of Cape Town at sunset looking towards a rugged mountain in the background

How to get to South Africa and Mauritius

One of the reasons I love this honeymoon combination is that, despite covering multiple destinations, the route is actually very straightforward.

Most international flights will arrive into either Cape Town or Johannesburg. For both itineraries, I recommend starting in Cape Town so your trip flows naturally from city to safari to beach.

From here, the route differs slightly depending on which itinerary you choose.

For the classic itinerary, you’ll take an internal flight from Cape Town to your safari destination. For the Garden Route itinerary, you won’t need to fly at this stage. Instead, you’ll hire a car and drive from the Winelands along the Garden Route, finishing in Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha).

From there, you’ll transfer to your Eastern Cape safari lodge.

After your safari – in both cases – you’ll route back through Johannesburg before catching a direct flight to Mauritius. These flights run regularly and are easy to build into your itinerary.

At the end of your honeymoon, you’ll fly home from Mauritius.

Here’s a simple visual of how this honeymoon flows:

Ideal trip length: 2-3 weeks
Best for: First-time visitors who want a balanced, seamless honeymoon

A view across the mountainous coastline of Cape Town, South Africa

Cape Town (3 nights)

Cape Town is the perfect place to start your honeymoon. It’s one of those rare cities that feels both vibrant and relaxed at the same time, and has so much to fall in love with.

After arriving, I recommend keeping your first day fairly light. Check into your hotel, take some time to unwind, and ease into the destination. A sunset dinner overlooking the ocean – particularly around Camps Bay – is a lovely way to start!

Because you have a few nights in Cape Town, you’ll be able to explore at a comfortable pace. There’s lots you can see and do, but one of the highlights is taking the cable car up Table Mountain.

The views are incredible, and it gives you a real sense of just how dramatic the landscape is. It’s a nice way to begin your trip so you can get an overview of the destination.

I also recommend a full-day trip around the Cape Peninsula. This will take you down to Cape Point, with scenic coastal drives and stops along the way – including Boulders Beach, where you can see penguins in their natural habitat.

Cape Town is also about the slower moments. Wandering the V&A Waterfront, browsing boutiques, stopping for coffee, or spending time on the beach.

Bucket list things to do in Cape Town:

✅ Take the cable car up Table Mountain
✅ Explore Cape Peninsula + Cape Point
✅ Visit the penguins at Boulders Beach
✅ Hike to the Lion’s Head summit
✅ Watch the sunset at Camps Bay

Where to stay in Cape Town

If you’re looking for a luxury honeymoon stay, these are three of my favourite options – each with a slightly different feel:

  • One&Only Cape Town – Best for a central, resort-style stay with Table Mountain views, multiple restaurants, and a more vibrant atmosphere
  • Ellerman House – A more exclusive, boutique option with incredible ocean views, exceptional service, and a strong focus on art and food
  • POD Camps Bay – A smaller, design-led hotel just steps from the beach, perfect if you want something more relaxed and coastal
Vineyards in the Cape Winelands, South Africa

Cape Winelands (2 nights)

From Cape Town, you’ll head to the Winelands – usually Stellenbosch or Franschhoek – which are both under two hours away but feel completely different to the city.

This part of your honeymoon is all about slowing things down, which is exactly what you want after sightseeing!

Your days will revolve around wine tastings, but it’s just as much about the setting. Rolling vineyards, mountain views, and beautifully designed boutique hotels make this one of the most romantic honeymoon destinations.

Most couples spend their time visiting a couple of wine estates each day. Franschhoek’s wine tram is also a popular option if you want a relaxed way to explore.

Bucket list things to do in the Cape Winelands:

✅ Wine tastings in Stellenbosch or Franschhoek
✅ Ride the Franschhoek wine tram
✅ Book a long lunch at a vineyard restaurant
✅ Stay at a boutique hotel
✅ Enjoy a private wine tour experience

Where to stay in the Cape Winelands

As this is one of the most romantic parts of the trip, choosing the right hotel really matters. These are three beautiful options:

  • Babylonstoren – A stunning working farm with gardens and vineyards, offering a unique, immersive stay
  • La Residence – Elegant and secluded, with incredible views across the Franschhoek Valley
  • Leeu Estates – A refined, boutique-style stay combining luxury, privacy and beautifully designed surroundings

Sabi Sands safari (3 nights)

From the Cape Winelands, you’ll fly to your safari destination. This is where your honeymoon shifts again into something completely different!

For this itinerary, I recommend staying in Sabi Sands in the Greater Kruger region. This private reserve is known for its exceptional guiding, high-end lodges, and incredible wildlife sightings.

If you’re deciding between safari styles, it’s worth understanding the difference between private reserves and national parks – you can find out more in my dedicated guide here.

There are three major airports that serve Sabi Sands. Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport for lodges in the western sector, Skukuza Airport for lodges in the southern sector, and Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport for lodges in the northern sector. You can fly to all of these airports directly from Cape Town.

When you arrive at your chosen luxury lodge, you’ll settle into the rhythm of safari life.

You’ll start early with a morning game drive, heading out just as the bush comes to life. After returning for breakfast, the middle of the day is yours to relax – whether that’s by the pool, in your suite, or enjoying the lodge’s facilities.

In the late afternoon, you’ll head out again for an evening drive, often staying out through sunset.

While nothing can ever be guaranteed, this is one of the best places in Africa for wildlife sightings – and it’s often the highlight of the entire honeymoon!

Bucket list safari experiences:

✅ Spotting the Big Five on game drives
✅ Enjoying sundowners in the bush
✅ Relaxing in a private plunge pool overlooking the reserve
✅ Taking part in guided bush walks
✅ Savouring a romantic bush dinner under the stars

Where to stay on safari (Sabi Sands)

Your safari lodge is one of the most important parts of your honeymoon. These are three exceptional options:

  • Singita Boulders Lodge – Ultra-luxury with exceptional guiding, contemporary design, and one of the most exclusive safari experiences in South Africa
  • Lion Sands Ivory Lodge – Private villa-style suites with plunge pools and a very polished, honeymoon-focused experience
  • Leopard Hills – A luxurious and intimate lodge with incredible views over the bush and consistently excellent wildlife sightings

Mauritius (5 nights)

After a safari, Mauritius is the perfect place for a tropical and relaxing beach extension! To get there from Sabi Sands, you’ll route back through Johannesburg before continuing on to Mauritius.

Most couples stay in a luxury five-star beachfront resort in Mauritius as this part of the honeymoon is all about relaxing. After a structured itinerary, it’s nice to have a few days where you don’t need a plan!

Your days might be spent by the pool or beach, enjoying spa treatments, or simply taking in the surroundings. The level of service and attention to detail in Mauritius is part of what makes it such a good honeymoon destination.

Bucket list things to do in Mauritius:

✅ Take a catamaran cruise along the coast
✅ Go snorkelling or diving
✅ Explore Black River Gorges National Park
✅ Enjoy sunset beach dinners
✅ Relax at the spa at your resort

Where to stay in Mauritius

For a honeymoon, I’d always recommend a luxury or adults-only beachfront resort. These are some of the best options depending on your style:

  • One&Only Le Saint Géran – One of the most iconic luxury resorts in Mauritius, known for its beautiful beach and exceptional service
  • LUX* Belle Mare – A stylish and modern resort with a relaxed but high-end feel, ideal for a more contemporary honeymoon
  • Veranda Paul & Virginie Hotel & Spa – A more intimate, adults-only hotel with a relaxed and romantic atmosphere, ideal if you prefer something quieter

Do you need a night in Johannesburg before flying to Mauritius?

You don’t always need to stay overnight in Johannesburg before flying to Mauritius, but it depends on your flight connections.

There are direct flights from Johannesburg to Mauritius, and if the timings line up, you can connect on the same day.

That said, safari flights don’t always perfectly align with international departures, and you’re often relying on smaller regional airlines.

Because of that, many couples choose to add one night in Johannesburg as a buffer – especially for a honeymoon where you don’t want any stress!

It also makes the travel day feel far more relaxed. Instead of rushing through connections, you can:

  • Arrive back in Johannesburg in the afternoon
  • Check into a comfortable hotel
  • Have a good dinner and reset before your beach stay

If your flights do line up smoothly, you can absolutely connect straight through. But if not – or if you simply want peace of mind – adding a night in Johannesburg is a good option.

Ideal trip length: Three weeks
Best for: Couples who want more variety and a scenic, experience-led honeymoon

The start of this itinerary stays the same. It then includes a road trip from the Cape Winelands through to Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha).

To make this work, I recommend renting a car from the day you leave Cape Town for the Cape Winelands. You can then drop it off in Port Elizabeth before heading on safari.

Cape Town (3 nights)

(Same structure as above)

Cape Winelands (2 nights)

(Same structure as above)

Secluded golden beach in South Africa with rocky cliffs and greenery

Garden Route road trip (6 nights)

From the Winelands, you’ll begin your journey along the Garden Route which is one of the most scenic coastal drives in the world. This part of the trip is more flexible and gives you the chance to explore at your own pace.

Stops like Hermanus (especially in whale season), Knysna and Plettenberg Bay offer a mix of coastal views, nature and relaxed towns.

This part of the honeymoon feels more immersive and adds a completely different dimension to your trip.

If you want a day by day breakdown of this part of the route, you can check out my in-depth Garden Route itinerary here.

Bucket list things to do along the Garden Route:

✅ Go whale watching in Hermanus (seasonal)
✅ Explore Knysna lagoon
✅ Enjoy the beaches in Plettenberg Bay
✅ Visit nature reserves and coastal viewpoints

Where to stay along the Garden Route

There are lots of stops along the Garden Route, but these are some of the best luxury options to base your stay:

An elephant walking in the road in front of a safari jeep in a national park in South Africa

Eastern Cape safari (3 nights)

What I love about this South Africa honeymoon itinerary is that your road trip ends in Port Elizabeth. This is where you can drop off your car, and transfer straight to your private game reserve.

This is a great option if you want to avoid the extra internal flight and keep your itinerary flowing naturally.

The Eastern Cape’s private game reserve lodges are an amazing choice for honeymooners. You’ll still get the classic safari structure like you’d get in Sabi Sands – with morning and evening game drives, combined with downtime at a luxury lodge.

Bucket list safari experiences:

✅ Spot the Big Five on game drives
✅ Relax at a luxury lodge, surrounded by nature
✅ Enjoy romantic dinners under the stars
✅ Take part in guided wildlife experiences

Where to stay on safari (Eastern Cape)

If you’re ending your trip in the Eastern Cape, these lodges are ideal for a honeymoon:

  • Shamwari Bayethe – A luxury tented lodge offering a private and romantic safari experience with excellent game viewing
  • Amakhala Safari Lodge – A more intimate and relaxed option, offering great value while still delivering a classic safari experience
  • Hopewell Private Game Reserve – A quiet and exclusive reserve with a strong focus on privacy and a personalised safari experience

Mauritius (5 nights)

You’ll finish your honeymoon with a few days of complete relaxation in Mauritius. After a more active itinerary, this part of the trip feels even more rewarding. It also gives you time to properly unwind before heading home!

Getting to Mauritius from the Eastern Cape is relatively simple. You’ll usually take a short domestic flight back to Johannesburg before continuing on to Mauritius.

There are no direct flights from the Eastern Cape to Mauritius, so this connection is standard, but straightforward.

In most cases, this journey can be done in one day. Flights from Port Elizabeth to Johannesburg are frequent, and there are regular direct flights from Johannesburg to Mauritius.

That said, similar to the Kruger route, this is one part of the itinerary where it’s worth thinking about how you want the day to feel.

If your flight timings are tight – or if you simply want to avoid any stress – you might want to add a one-night stopover in Johannesburg. It breaks up the journey, gives you time to reset, and means you arrive in Mauritius feeling relaxed rather than rushed.

Bucket list Mauritius highlights:

✅ Relax by the beach or pool
✅ Take a catamaran cruise or island excursion
✅ Go snorkelling or diving
✅ Enjoy romantic sunset dinners by the ocean

Where to stay in Mauritius

For hotel recommendations, you can refer to the options above — all work perfectly whether you’re following the classic or Garden Route itinerary.

How to shorten or extend this South Africa and Mauritius honeymoon

One of the best things about a South Africa and Mauritius honeymoon is how flexible it is. Both of these itineraries can easily be adapted depending on how much time you have and how you like to travel.

If you have less time (10–12 nights)

If you’re working with a shorter timeframe, the key is to keep things simple and avoid overloading your itinerary.

The easiest way to do this is:

✅ Stick to Cape Town + safari + Mauritius
✅ Skip the Garden Route and reduce time in the Winelands to a day trip or a one-night stay

For example:

  • Cape Town (3–4 nights)
  • Safari (3 nights)
  • Mauritius (4-5 nights)

This still gives you that full experience without feeling rushed.

If you have more time (3+ weeks)

If you have longer, this is where the itinerary opens up! You can slow everything down and add more depth without it feeling too busy.

Ways to extend your trip:

✅ Add the Garden Route if you’re starting with the classic itinerary
✅ Spend longer in Cape Town (there’s easily enough to fill 4–5 nights)
✅ Increase your safari stay to 4–5 nights for a more immersive experience
✅ Add extra time in Mauritius

This works particularly well if you want a honeymoon that feels more relaxed.

If you want to prioritise a safari

If the safari is your main reason for booking this trip, it’s worth adjusting your itinerary to reflect that.

You could:

✅ Extend your safari stay to 4–5 nights
✅ Reduce your time in Cape Town or Mauritius

This is a great option if you want a deeper, more immersive wildlife experience.

If you want more beach time

If your priority is relaxing, it’s easy to shift the balance towards Mauritius.

You could:

✅ Extend Mauritius to 7 nights+
✅ Keep South Africa slightly shorter and more focused. For some couples, it makes sense to just do a safari and not visit Cape Town

This works particularly well if you want your honeymoon to feel more like a true escape at the end.

If you want to reduce travel time

If you’d prefer to keep things as simple as possible, I’d recommend:

✅ Choosing the Cape Town + Winelands + safari + Mauritius route
✅ Avoiding the Garden Route (as it adds driving and additional stops)

This version of the itinerary flows really well and is the least complex to organise.

My overall advice

It’s tempting to fit a lot in – especially when you realise how much South Africa has to offer. However, this trip works best when it feels balanced and well-paced.

You want time to actually enjoy each place, not just move through it!

If you focus on what matters most to you and build your itinerary around that, it’s very easy to create a honeymoon that feels effortless.

Best time to go (South Africa + Mauritius seasons)

Timing is one of the most important parts of planning a South Africa and Mauritius honeymoon.

South Africa

  • Cape Town & Garden Route: Best from November to March (warm, dry, summer weather)
  • Sabi Sands / Kruger safari: Best from May to October (dry season = better wildlife visibility)
  • Eastern Cape safari: Can work year-round, making it a more flexible option

Mauritius

  • Best from May to November (dry, cooler, less humid)
  • December to April is warmer and more humid, with a higher chance of rain (but still popular)

When is best overall?

If you want to balance everything:

May, September, October are excellent all-round months

You may need to compromise slightly between Cape Town weather and safari conditions – this is normal!

How much does a South Africa and Mauritius honeymoon cost?

This is a luxury itinerary, but it offers strong value compared to other long-haul honeymoons.

It will generally be more affordable than a Tanzania / Zanzibar multi-destination honeymoon. Mauritius also offers brilliant value compared to the Maldives!

Typical cost (per couple):

  • £10,000–£15,000: Entry-level luxury (mix of boutique + high-end stays)
  • £15,000–£25,000: High-end luxury (private safari lodges + premium resorts)
  • £25,000+: Ultra-luxury (top-tier lodges, private villas, upgrades throughout)

What affects the price most:

  • Safari lodge (this is usually the biggest cost)
  • Length of stay
  • Time of year

If you want a more detailed breakdown, I’ve shared realistic pricing in my guide to how much a South Africa safari honeymoon costs.

FAQs: South Africa and Mauritius honeymoon

Is South Africa a good honeymoon destination?

Absolutely, yes! South Africa is one of the best honeymoon destinations if you want adventure and variety. You can combine cities, wine regions, beaches, road trips, and safari in one trip, making it ideal for a well-rounded, experience-led honeymoon.

Is Mauritius a good honeymoon destination?

Mauritius is perfect for a luxury honeymoon. It offers beautiful beaches, high-end resorts, great service, and optional activities, making it ideal for relaxing at the end of a multi-stop trip.

Which is better: Maldives or Mauritius?

The Maldives is more secluded and resort-focused, while Mauritius offers more variety, including excursions, landscapes and culture. For a South Africa combination, Mauritius is usually the more practical choice.

How long do you need for a South Africa and Mauritius honeymoon?

Ideally, allow 2 weeks minimum, or longer if you want to include the Garden Route.

Is South Africa safe for a honeymoon?

Yes, when planned properly. The main honeymoon areas (Cape Town, Winelands, safari regions) are well-travelled and safe with sensible precautions.

How to plan your South Africa and Mauritius honeymoon

If you’re feeling slightly overwhelmed reading this – that’s completely normal! This is a multi-stop, high-value trip and there are a lot of moving parts.

The key is to approach it in the right order.

Start with your overall timeframe and budget, as these will shape everything else. From there, decide what matters most to you.

For some couples, that’s prioritising a top-tier safari lodge. For others, it’s having more time in Cape Town or ending with a standout beach resort in Mauritius.

Once you’re clear on your priorities, the itinerary becomes a lot easier to structure.

The next step is to map out your route. A classic Cape Town + Cape Winelands + safari + Mauritius itinerary works well if you want something seamless. If you’ve got more time and want a slightly more adventurous feel, adding the Garden Route is a brilliant option.

After that, focus on your key bookings first – particularly safari lodges. These tend to have limited availability and are often the most important (and expensive) parts of your honeymoon.

It’s also worth thinking about pacing. It can be tempting to try and fit everything in, but this kind of trip works best when it feels balanced. You want enough time in each place to actually enjoy it – not just tick it off!

These itineraries are popular for a reason. They flow well, make logistical sense, and deliver an incredible mix of experiences without feeling disjointed!

If you’re still deciding on the details, I’d begin by thinking about the safari element. Reading through my luxury safari honeymoon guide will help you understand how everything fits together, from destinations to pricing.

From there, it becomes much easier to choose the right lodges (you can explore some of the best luxury safari lodges in South Africa here), understand the best time to go on a safari honeymoon, and refine your itinerary so it feels completely right for you!
