Best honeymoon destinations in May

1 Fiji

A sweeping stretch of golden tropical beach, fringed by palm trees in Fiji

If you want a tropical paradise, you can’t go wrong with a May honeymoon to Fiji. This South Pacific country is an island heaven with swaying palms, crystal clear waters, secluded beaches and luxury resorts

It’s a country that feels like it was made for honeymooners. So whether you want to relax in five-star accommodation or you want more things to see and do – Fiji has you covered!

May is the start of Fiji’s dry season so it’s a great time to visit. You can expect lovely warm weather around 28ºC – perfect for making the most of this beautiful destination.

If you have time for a longer honeymoon, I recommend island hopping in Fiji. But equally, a shorter break in Fiji will still be a dream honeymoon. There’s so much to love!

Where to stay: Likuliku Lagoon Resort

2 United States of America

A golden beach and coastline in California, USA

Whether you live in the States or you’re travelling from abroad, this amazing country has so much for you to fall in love with. May is an ideal time to explore lots of the United States, but my favourite spots for a honeymoon have to be California and New York.

In May, California is the perfect climate for a road trip honeymoon (you’ll also avoid the summer crowds). You can expect dream days cruising along the coast, stopping at vineyards, exploring national parks and visiting cities like LA and San Diego.

On the other coast, you can’t go wrong with a honeymoon in New York City in May. This is when the city is in spring bloom so it’s perfect for exploring everything on offer!

Where to stay: Alila Ventana Big Sur

3 Hawaii (USA)

Staying in the US, Hawaii is another brilliant choice. This is a May honeymoon destination that’s popular with newlyweds and there’s so much to experience.

May is one of the best months to visit as it’s during the dry season. You can expect warm, sunny days as well as fewer crowds than you’d get in the peak of summer.

If you want to see several destinations, island hopping in May is great for a Hawaiian honeymoon. There are so many gorgeous settings to take in with remote beaches, tropical rainforests and wild, dramatic scenery – it’s a fab option if you love to explore.

You’ll also find beautiful beachfront resorts and luxurious accommodation that’s perfect for couples.

Where to stay: The Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua

4 Indonesia

If you’re dreaming of a Southeast Asia honeymoon, Indonesia is an amazing option for May. Much of this part of the world is in its wet season at this time of year, but Indonesia is an exception with lovely dry weather.

There are tons of places you could visit in Indonesia. Bali is the most popular and is a fab choice for a honeymoon. It’s known for backpackers and crowds, but it’s a brilliant destination for luxury with some of the most romantic honeymoon resorts!

Elsewhere in Indonesia, the Gili Islands are a beach paradise and are perfect to combine with Bali for a multi-destination honeymoon. You could also visit Lombok or Sumba – these islands are less visited and can feel more authentic than Bali.

5 South Africa

I love South Africa so much. It’s one of those places that seems to have everything – great cities, golden beaches, romantic vineyards as well as bucket list safaris.

If you’re dreaming of a wildlife honeymoon, May is a great time for a safari in South Africa. It’s the start of the dry, peak season if you head to Kruger National Park. You could also safari in the Eastern Cape where you’ll find private game reserves that are amazing for a honeymoon.

If you have longer for your trip, you could rent a car and hit the Garden Route from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha). It can feel cooler at this time of year as the weather turns from autumn to winter, but it does mean it can be quieter and you could find better deals!

Where to stay: HillsNek Safari Camp

6 Japan

Not many places compare with Japan in the springtime. If you’re wanting a honeymoon adventure – this could be the perfect destination for you!

From the bright lights of Tokyo to gorgeous scenery and culture in Kyoto, Japan is always a good idea. There’s loads to take in across the country (as well as some incredible accommodation), so you’ll probably want a 2-week honeymoon to make the most of it.

In May, you’ll get mild weather in the Honshu region with temperatures in the low-mid 20ºCs. It’s not a guarantee, but you might see the last of the year’s cherry blossoms, too!

Where to stay: Dusit Thani Kyoto

7 Greece

Greece is one of the best places to honeymoon in Europe and May is a fantastic time to visit. This is a country that’s known for its long, hot summers, so in May you can expect balmy days without the stifling heat that comes a little later.

There’s so much to explore across Greece. If you have the time, an island-hopping honeymoon is a great option for taking in more settings. The Cyclades Islands like Santorini, Mykonos and Naxos are popular for this.

In May, you have your pick of the best before the summer crowds arrive. You could visit the capital of Athens or head north to Meteora. Crete, Kos and Corfu are also great islands for couples with beautiful scenery and amazing hotels.

Where to stay: Abaton Island Resort & Spa, Angsana Corfu Resort & Spa

8 Spain

Like Greece, Spain is another of the top May honeymoon destinations in Europe. This beautiful country is one of my favourites – it has so many gorgeous settings with picturesque rural scenery, amazing beaches and vibrant cities.

May is a great time to visit Spain as summer approaches. Places like Andalusia in the south of the mainland will be lovely and warm with sunny temperatures in the mid 20ºCs. I highly recommend visiting Seville or Granada if you want a unique May honeymoon.

The Balearic Islands (Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza) are also incredible places to go on honeymoon in May. You’ll get dream coastal scenery, pretty towns and mild weather.

9 French Polynesia

Turquoise tropical seas with overwater bungalows in French Polynesia

Want a honeymoon where you can fully relax and do very little? If you’re dreaming of paradise vibes and all the tropical scenery, I wouldn’t be surprised if French Polynesia is on your bucket list!

There’s a good reason why this is one of the world’s best honeymoon destinations. It’s on a par with the Maldives and has everything honeymooners could want with luxury romantic hotels and dream scenery in places like Bora Bora and Moorea.

Luckily, May is a brilliant time to visit this gorgeous destination. It’s the start of the country’s dry season, so you can expect hot, sunny weather that’s perfect for sunbathing, snorkelling and soaking up the setting.

Where to stay: InterContinental Bora Bora & Thalasso Spa

10 Borneo (Malaysia)

A baby orangutan swinging in the trees in Borneo

Borneo is one of the best May honeymoon locations if you want something a little different. It’s a fantastic eco destination so it’s a top choice if you love nature and want to get away from it all.

In May, a lot of Borneo is sunny with lower rainfall. You can expect hot weather that’s perfect for all the best activities. If you’re an active couple, you could jungle trek, spot orangutans and stay in a rainforest lodge in Sabah for a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

You could also head to the beach and go tropical island hopping around Kota Kinabalu. It’s rainier in this part in May, but it’s still a paradise setting and can be cheaper this month, too.

Where to stay: Borneo Rainforest Lodge

11 Morocco

A traditional Moroccan town set in the desert

Adventure, culture, beaches, desert, cities… Morocco has a TON to offer. If that’s what you’re dreaming of for your honeymoon, May is a fab time to visit this African country.

Morocco in May is defined by warm spring weather. It varies across regions, but if you want to visit Marrakech, temperatures can reach 30ºC. It’s also pleasant on the coast with places like Essaouira or Agadir falling in the low-mid 20ºCs.

May is also one of the best times for exploring the High Atlas Mountains. You might also be able to head into the desert before the crazy summer heat sets in – perfect if you want to tick off a bucket list experience!

Where to stay: Mandarin Oriental, Marrakech

12 Seychelles

I absolutely love the Seychelles as a honeymoon destination. It’s a luxury Indian Ocean paradise that’s perfect for couples who want the best of island life.

Across the islands, you’ll find incredible luxury hotels and resorts that have honeymooners in mind. It’s also a country with a big focus on nature and relaxation, so it’s great for connecting and unwinding after the stresses of wedding planning!

May is a great time to visit the Seychelles when it’s drier with sunny days of around 30ºC. It’s an idyllic time for enjoying the beaches as well as snorkelling and scuba diving (particularly at the start of the month before the trade winds kick in).

Where to stay: Anantara Maia Seychelles Villas

13 Italy

Want to experience La Dolce Vita? You can’t go wrong with a honeymoon in Italy! This is a country that’s easily one of the best honeymoon destinations in Europe in May. It’s romantic, beautiful and has so many charming settings!

Whether you want to explore cities like Venice, Florence and Rome, or you want to head to the Amalfi Coast or Cinque Terre – May will be perfect. You could also visit Lake Como or enjoy the beaches in Positano where temperatures will be in the mid to low 20ºCs.

This is a month that marks the start of the tourist season for much of Italy so it’s a perfect time to visit before the crowds of summer arrive.

14 Canada

A view across pine forest towards snow-capped mountains in British Columbia, Canada

Canada is known for its snowy winters, so if you want to visit, May is when the weather starts improving. Typically, the western part of the country is the most romantic for a honeymoon with places like Vancouver, Jasper and Banff National Park

By late May, summer attractions start reopening for the season but it’s still a quieter time to visit making it great for avoiding crowds and getting more affordable prices.

Renting a car is a good idea if you want to maximise your honeymoon (and if you have several weeks to play with). A road trip from Vancouver to Calgary is perfect if you want a back-to-nature adventure, but I recommend going towards the end of the month to have better chances with the weather.

Where to stay: Fairmont Banff Springs

15 Namibia

I’ve always loved the idea of an African honeymoon – this continent offers so many bucket list experiences and Namibia is no exception.

This is a country that has so much to love, from amazing safaris in Etosha National Park to incredible desert scenery. It’s also where you’ll find some of the best remote lodges and wilderness accommodation – they’re perfect for a honeymoon!

If you want to visit, May marks the start of the cooler dry season in Namibia so you can expect clear sunny days. It’s a good month for outdoor activities as well as for spotting wildlife on a dream honeymoon safari.
