The Maldives is one of the world’s most iconic honeymoon destinations. It’s famous for its overwater villas, turquoise lagoons and luxurious private island resorts.

It’s an incredible place to celebrate your honeymoon, but it isn’t the perfect fit for every couple.

One thing many people don’t realise is that the Maldives is all about your resort. If you’re dreaming of days spent relaxing in an overwater villa, snorkelling and enjoying world-class service, it’s hard to beat.

But if you’d like to combine luxury with adventure, culture or wildlife, there are other destinations that might suit you better.

In my experience as a travel agent, couples usually aren’t looking for an exact copy of the Maldives – they’re looking for the kind of feeling that it gives them.

Whether that’s total privacy, crystal-clear water, barefoot luxury or a once-in-a-lifetime honeymoon, there are plenty of places around the world that capture the same vibe – and usually with added extras!

It could be waking up in an overwater villa to the mountainous scenery of French Polynesia, combining a luxury safari with the beaches of Zanzibar, or island hopping through the Philippines. Whatever your travel style and what you’re looking for, this guide will help you find your perfect place like the Maldives.

For a lot of honeymooners, staying in an overwater villa is the ultimate Maldives experience. The good news? The Maldives isn’t the only place where you can wake up in bucket list accommodation. These destinations offer equally amazing options, often with the added bonus of more culture, adventure or wildlife!

1 French Polynesia – the best place for Maldives-style luxury

If you’re searching for a destination that captures the same magic as the Maldives, French Polynesia has to be at the very top of your list!

This is a destination with crystal-clear lagoons, luxurious overwater villas and a laid-back island atmosphere… it’s about as close as you’ll get to the classic Maldives experience.

Bora Bora is the country’s ultimate honeymoon paradise. It’s an island that’s home to some of the world’s most luxurious resorts and beautiful postcard scenery. 

It’s surrounded by impossibly turquoise water and dramatic volcanic peaks that make it feel even more perfect than the Maldives! If you’ve ever dreamed of waking up in an overwater villa with uninterrupted lagoon views, this is the place to do it.

Like the Maldives, luxury comes at a price in French Polynesia, but it absolutely delivers if you want a bucket list experience in the South Pacific.

What I love most is that there’s also far more to do beyond your resort than in the Maldives. You could go island hopping between Bora Bora, Moorea and Tahiti, hike through lush volcanic landscapes or soak up the relaxed Polynesian culture.

💛 My honeymoon tip: If your budget allows it, split your stay between Bora Bora and Moorea. You’ll be able to experience two different islands and make the most of the long journey to French Polynesia.

2 Fiji – a destination with the best islands like Maldives

When it comes to destinations like the Maldives, Fiji is an incredible choice. It’s no secret that it’s one of my favourite tropical destinations and somewhere I’d happily recommend to any honeymooners looking for barefoot luxury with a little more adventure.

Like the Maldives, Fiji has palm-fringed beaches, crystal-clear lagoons and some of the world’s most romantic luxury resorts, – including some with overwater villas. It’s the perfect place to relax, unwind and enjoy everything you’d expect from a bucket-list island honeymoon.

However, one of the best things about Fiji is that there’s so much to see, do and experience! Before visiting Fiji, I thought it would be all beaches and not much else – but I was so wrong! This is a destination that has culture, hiking, gorgeous scenery and so many active experiences.

Unlike the Maldives, Fiji is made for island hopping. My favourite itinerary is to spend a few nights in the Mamanuca Islands before heading to the more remote Yasawa Islands. It gives you a lot more freedom than spending a week on one resort.

💛 My honeymoon tip: Don’t limit yourselves to just one island. Combining two or three islands gives you the chance to experience different landscapes, resorts and some of the best snorkelling in the South Pacific.

3 Jamaica – a great all-inclusive Maldives-style option

If you’re dreaming of the Maldives but don’t want to spend your entire honeymoon restricted to your resort, Jamaica is a fantastic alternative.

It’s one of the few destinations outside the Maldives where you can stay in luxurious overwater villas, while also enjoying a huge variety of experiences beyond the beach.

Jamaica offers everything you’d expect from a tropical honeymoon destination. You’ll get white-sand beaches, crystal-clear Caribbean waters and luxury all-inclusive resorts where everything is taken care of. 

Unlike the Maldives, you can also spend your days chasing waterfalls, rafting along jungle rivers, hiking through lush mountains or discovering the island’s vibrant music, food and culture.

One of the biggest reasons honeymooners love Jamaica is for its incredible’ overwater villas at Sandals South Coast.

I love selling Sandals resorts as a travel agent and have received lots of great feedback from honeymooners about their properties across the Caribbean.

Sandals’ overwater villas are very similar to what you’d find in the Maldives. It’s a brilliant choice if you want the romance of an overwater stay without feeling limited to one private island.

💛 My honeymoon tip: If an overwater villa is on your bucket list, book as early as possible. Sandals’ overwater bungalows are among the most popular accommodation options in the Caribbean and often sell out in advance.

4 Mauritius – Africa’s best Maldives alternative

If you’re looking for a destination that combines luxury beach resorts with adventure, Mauritius is one of my favourite alternatives to the Maldives. 

Mauritius is located in the same part of the world as the Maldives and is a classic choice for a tropical island honeymoon. However, I generally recommend Mauritius a little more than the Maldives.

Mauritius offers a lot of the same things that couples love about the Maldives – like gorgeous beaches, crystal-clear lagoons and exceptional luxury hotels – but it has so much more to offer!

As well as amazing snorkelling and diving in Mauritius, you’ll also have the chance to hike through lush mountains, discover waterfalls, spot wildlife and explore the island’s blend of Indian, African, French and Creole cultures. 

Mauritius is more varied than a honeymoon to the Maldives and it’s one I often suggest to couples if they think they might struggle to spend a week relaxing at one resort.

Another reason I recommend Mauritius is for the value for money. Luxury hotels are much more affordable than those in the Maldives, so you can have five-star accommodation for a lot less. You’ll even find a handful of resorts that have overwater villas, including the beautiful Constance Prince Maurice.

💛 My honeymoon tip: If your budget allows, hire a car for a few days or book a private island tour. Exploring the island’s mountains, waterfalls and local villages is what sets Mauritius apart from the Maldives.

Luxury destinations that rival the Maldives

The following options don’t have overwater villas. However, they still have the turquoise water, white-sand beaches and luxury resorts that people love about the Maldives – along with experiences that you won’t neccesarily find on a private island.

5 Seychelles – the best Maldives alternative for privacy

💛 Best for: Couples looking for ultimate privacy, first-class luxury and some of the most world’s most beautiful beaches.
📆 Best time to visit: April to May & October to November

If privacy is at the top of your honeymoon wishlist, it’s hard to look beyond the Seychelles.

Scattered across the Indian Ocean, this collection of 115 islands offers the same exclusivity and barefoot luxury as the Maldives, but with dramatic granite boulders, tropical forests and some of the world’s most photographed beaches.

Like the Maldives, this is a remote vacation spot and a heavenly choice if you want somewhere secluded. Your honeymoon will be spent relaxing on powder-soft beaches, snorkelling in crystal-clear water and enjoying world-class hospitality at some of the planet’s most luxurious resorts. 

I wouldn’t recommend the Seychelles if you’re looking for tons to see and do. But if your idea of the perfect honeymoon involves switching off completely and escaping the crowds, this is one of the best destinations you’ll find anywhere in the world!

One of the biggest highlights of the Seychelles is Anse Source d’Argent on La Digue, which is often described as one of the world’s most beautiful beaches. With its giant granite boulders, turquoise lagoons and swaying palm trees, it’s every bit as breathtaking as the iconic beaches of the Maldives. 

💛 My honeymoon tip: Don’t stay on just one island. Combining Mahé, Praslin and La Digue will give you a much richer experience and lets you discover some of the Seychelles’ most spectacular beaches and luxury resorts.

6 Zanzibar – the best Maldives-style island to combine with a safari

If you’re looking for a Maldives alternative with more adventure, Zanzibar has to be high on your list. It’s best known for its palm-fringed beaches, turquoise waters and luxury resorts, but what makes Zanzibar special is everything you can experience beyond the beach.

The island has all the ingredients of a dream honeymoon destination – from powder-soft white sand and crystal-clear Indian Ocean waters to boutique luxury hotels and incredible snorkelling. 

But compared to other tropical islands, Zanzibar still feels a little less commercial, making it a fantastic choice if you’re looking for somewhere with a more authentic feel.

My favourite thing about Zanzibar is how easily it combines with mainland Tanzania. After spending a few days spotting the Big Five on safari in the Serengeti or Ngorongoro Crater, there’s nowhere better to unwind than on Zanzibar’s idyllic coastline!

This combination is probably what I would pick if I was planning my own honeymoon. It’s one of my favourite combinations and one that offers so much more variety than the Maldives alone.

💛 My honeymoon tip: If you have the time, combine Zanzibar with a safari in Tanzania. It’s one of the world’s most iconic honeymoon itineraries and gives you the best of both worlds.

7 Mozambique – an under-the-radar place like Maldives

💛 Best for: Couples looking for barefoot luxury, total seclusion and an off-the-beaten-path honeymoon.
📆 Best time to visit: May to October

If you’re looking for somewhere that feels every bit as idyllic as the Maldives but far less touristy, Mozambique is one of my favourite alternatives. 

Nestled between Tanzania and South Africa, Mozambique is an authentic and exotic African beach honeymoon destination. It feels like an undiscovered choice yet it’s a country that has endless miles of gorgeous coastline and some of Africa’s most exclusive island resorts.

Like the Maldives, Mozambique is all about privacy and relaxation. The beautiful Bazaruto and Quirimbas Archipelagos are dotted with luxury lodges, boutique beach resorts and villas where you can spend your days snorkelling vibrant coral reefs, sailing on traditional dhow boats or unwinding on empty beaches.

What makes Mozambique so special is that if feels adventurous. It’s still relatively under the radar compared to destinations like the Maldives or Mauritius so it feels a lot more untouched. 

Beyond its paradise beaches, Mozambique is a culturally rich destination that’s perfect for exploring. You can immerse yourself in local culture, explore colourful coastal towns or even combine your honeymoon with a safari in South Africa.

💛 My honeymoon tip: If your budget allows, stay on one of the private islands in the Bazaruto Archipelago. They’re home to some of the country’s most spectacular beaches and offer the kind of exclusivity that’s becoming increasingly hard to find.

8 Palawan, Philippines – one of the cheaper Maldives alternatives

💛 Best for: Couples looking for a more affordable alternative to the Maldives without compromising on beautiful scenery.
📆 Best time to visit: November to May

If you’re looking for a destination that offers the same crystal-clear water and tropical island feel as the Maldives, but at a much more affordable price, Palawan is hard to beat. 

Palawan is often described as one of the world’s most beautiful destinations and is famous for its turquoise lagoons, soft-sand beaches, dramatic limestone cliffs and lush tropical jungles. The scenery is an incredible rival to the Maldives!

Like the Maldives, Palawan has secluded beaches, glistening waters and vibrant coral reefs. But it also has diverse scenery and a lot more to see and do.

Unlike the Maldives, Palawan is made for island hopping so it’s perfect if you want a little more variety during your honeymoon. Most couples will split their time between El Nido and Coron, but smaller islands are great if you want to escape the crowds. 

Another huge advantage of Palawan is the value for money. A lot of people don’t initially realise how expensive the Maldives is, and your budget will stretch so much further in the Philippines! This means you can enjoy boutique island resorts, private villas and unforgettable boat trips without the premium price tag.

💛 My honeymoon tip: Split your stay between El Nido and Coron if you can. Each has its own character, and together they showcase the best of Palawan.

9 Malaysia

💛 Best for: Couples looking for luxury villas, tropical beaches and a honeymoon with plenty of variety.
📆 Best time to visit: November to March (Langkawi) or March to October (Perhentian Islands)

Malaysia is one of the most underrated alternatives to the Maldives and is one of my favourite choices for a honeymoon in Southeast Asia. It still offers luxury resorts, turquoise waters and villas that many couples dream of, but it has so much more beyond that.

If you’re dreaming of combining a relaxing island escape with rainforest adventures, incredible food and fascinating local culture, Malaysia is a fantastic choice.

For most honeymooners, Langkawi is the best destination. This archipelago is made of 99 islands and is home to palm-fringed beaches, lush rainforest and some of the country’s most luxurious resorts. 

Unlike the Maldives, you could spend your days exploring mangrove forests, hiking to waterfalls or taking the famous Langkawi SkyCab for panoramic views over the islands before returning to your luxury resort.

If you’re looking for somewhere a little quieter, the Perhentian Islands are another brilliant option in Malaysia. You’ll find a more laid-back atmosphere with crystal-clear water, colourful coral reefs and fantastic snorkelling. 

💛 My honeymoon tip: If you want more of a honeymoon adventure, I recommend combining Langkawi with other destinations in Malaysia. On our 2 week trip, we combined Langkawi with Penang and Kuala Lumpur and it offered a brilliant mix of scenery and experiences.

10 Thailand 

💛 Best for: Couples looking for tropical beaches, luxury resorts and plenty of adventure beyond the beach.

Thailand is one of my favourite honeymoon destinations and is easily one of the best alternatives to the Maldives. This is a country that has idyllic white-sand beaches, turquoise water and luxury beachfront resorts, but there’s much more to it than simply relaxing by the ocean.

For honeymooners, I almost always recommend Koh Samui. This island is home to some of Thailand’s most luxurious resorts and is the perfect place to unwind while still having plenty to see and do. 

From island-hopping excursions and snorkelling trips to beach clubs, temples and bustling night markets, every day can feel completely different on this island.

One of the things I also love about Thailand is how you can combine so much into one big adventure. You could spend a few days relaxing on Koh Samui before heading to nearby islands such as Koh Tao or Koh Phangan, or combine your beach stay with Bangkok or Chiang Mai.

It’s this flexibility that makes Thailand such a brilliant choice for couples who want more than just a beach holiday.

💛 My honeymoon tip: Don’t spend your entire honeymoon in one place. If you want to get a real feel for Thailand, you’ll want to combine Koh Samui with another Thai destination like Bangkok, Chiang Mai or nearby islands.

11 Mexico

If you’re dreaming of the luxury and relaxation of the Maldives but want far more to see and do, Mexico is one of my favourite alternatives. 

The country’s Caribbean coastline is home to the softest white-sand beaches, turquoise water and some of the world’s best all-inclusive resorts so it’s a brilliant choice for a romantic honeymoon. I genuinely rave so much about the experience we had in Mexico!

I recommend staying in the Riviera Maya where you can spend one day unwinding by the pool with a margarita in hand, then the next swimming in crystal-clear cenotes, exploring ancient Mayan ruins or snorkelling on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. 

When we visited, we spent most of our time relaxing at our resort, but we also went on snorkelling excursions and took day trips to Tulum and Isla Holbox. Compared to the Maldives, it offers a perfect balance of relaxation and discovery!

💛 My honeymoon tip: If you have the time, combine two destinations. I love pairing a luxury resort in the Riviera Maya with a few nights in Tulum or Isla Holbox for a honeymoon that blends relaxation with a completely different atmosphere.

📸 Top experiences: Swim in a cenote, explore the Mayan ruins of Tulum or Chichén Itzá, snorkel the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, relax on the beaches of the Riviera Maya and watch the sunset on Isla Holbox.

12 St Lucia – one of the most romantic places in the Caribbean

If you’re dreaming of a luxury Caribbean honeymoon, St Lucia is one of the best alternatives to the Maldives. It offers the same romantic atmosphere and incredible five-star resorts as the Maldives but the scenery couldn’t be more different.

Instead of low-lying coral islands, you’ll find lush rainforest, volcanic peaks and the iconic Piton mountains rising dramatically from the Caribbean Sea. It’s a picture-perfect destination that rivals the Maldives’s postcard views.

Like the Maldives, St Lucia is known for luxury, and has lots of secluded hotels that are ideal for a romantic break.

What really sets the island apart is how much there is to experience outside your resort. One day you could be relaxing on a beautiful beach, the next hiking through rainforest, soaking in volcanic mud baths or sailing along the coastline at sunset.

It’s also one of the Caribbean’s most romantic destinations. If you want classic honeymoon experiences, you’ll be able to enjoy private candlelit dinners overlooking the ocean, horse riding along the beach or cruising beneath the Pitons with a glass of champagne.

💛 My honeymoon tip: Stay in the Soufrière area if you can. Waking up to views of the Pitons is one of the things that makes St Lucia feel so romantic.

13 Turks & Caicos

If your favourite thing about the Maldives is its impossibly turquoise water and sugar-sand beaches, Turks & Caicos needs to be high on your list. 

This Caribbean paradise is home to the award-winning Grace Bay Beach and has similar picture-perfect scenery and luxury resorts that make the Maldives so special.

With a quieter scene compared to other Caribbean spots, Turks & Caicos is ideal if you want privacy and relaxation. It’s easy to see why it’s one of the best alternatives to Maldives with such blissful surroundings!

Days here will be spent snorkelling colourful coral reefs, sailing between secluded cays or simply unwinding on beaches that regularly rank among the most beautiful in the world.

Turks & Caicos is made up of around 40 islands and cays so it also offers plenty of opportunities to explore beyond your resort. The surrounding waters are home to one of the world’s largest barrier reef systems, making it an amazing destination for snorkelling, diving and boat trips. 

Turks & Caicos leans towards the pricier side, but it has incredible accommodation that’s perfect for honeymooners – from private island villas to beach resorts and luxury water pavilions.

💛 My honeymoon tip: Take a half-day boat trip to Little Water Cay or Half Moon Bay. These quieter islands are every bit as beautiful as Grace Bay and often feel wonderfully secluded.

If you’re looking for a honeymoon that combines tropical island luxury with one of the world’s greatest natural wonders, the Whitsundays are hard to beat. 

Scattered just off the coast of Queensland in Australia, these 74 idyllic islands offer the same crystal-clear water, white-sand beaches and luxurious resorts that make the Maldives so special, but with the added bonus of easy access to the Great Barrier Reef!

Whitehaven Beach is the most famous place in the Whitsundays. It’s known for being one of the world’s most stunning beaches with powdery white sands and crystal-clear waters. It’s easily one of the best I’ve seen and genuinely looks like the photos.

The Whitsundays also offer much more than beautiful beaches. You can spend your days snorkelling or diving on the Great Barrier Reef, sailing between secluded islands, hiking to spectacular lookouts or simply unwinding at one of the region’s luxury resorts. 

While this is an area that’s popular with backpackers, there are also incredible resorts catering to honeymooners. It’s the perfect place to unwind and soak up the paradise setting.

Costa Rica might not be the most obvious alternative to the Maldives, but if what you’re really looking for is privacy, breathtaking natural beauty and a honeymoon that feels completely removed from everyday life, it’s an incredible choice!

Instead of overwater villas and remote castaway islands, you’ll find luxury rainforest lodges, secluded beach retreats and eco-resorts tucked away in some of the world’s most biodiverse landscapes. 

Costa Rica is all about nature. It’s the kind of destination where you can wake up to the sounds of tropical birds, spend the morning spotting monkeys and sloths, then unwind in a private infinity pool overlooking the jungle or Pacific Ocean.

If your dream trip revolves around waking up in an overwater villa, snorkelling straight from your deck and spending your days relaxing in complete luxury, it genuinely lives up to the hype.

The reason for this post is that the Maldives isn’t the perfect honeymoon for everyone.  If you’d rather combine your beach escape with wildlife, hiking, island hopping or local culture, one of the destinations in this guide might be a better fit for you.

There’s absolutely no right or wrong choice. The best honeymoon isn’t about booking the destination everyone else is going to, it’s about choosing the one that feels right for YOU!
