17 Best City Breaks in February: Romantic Destinations for a Winter City Honeymoon

Are you searching for the best city breaks in February or dreaming of a romantic winter city for your honeymoon? If you’re wondering where’s best to visit at this time of year – I’ve got you!

February might not seem like the best time for a romantic city break but there are so many magical choices at this time of year. Whether it’s a snowy break in Europe or a sunny escape further afield, February is one of my favourite times to get away.

So if you want inspiration and help planning your winter city honeymoon – I’ve got you! Here’s my list of some of the best city breaks to take in February next year!

Why take a romantic city break in February

February isn’t the most common time to travel but that’s exactly why it’s perfect for a city honeymoon or a romantic short break. If you travel at this time of year, you’ll benefit for so many reasons… I regularly go away in February and I’ve had the best trips in this month!

Depending on where you go, you’ll get different experiences in February. If you choose a city break in Europe in February there’s the chance of finding yourself in a cosy, winter wonderland. You’ll also enjoy quieter streets and the kind of cosy, romantic atmosphere that’s harder to find in peak season.

Many of these destinations are significantly cheaper in winter, too. It’s a win if you want to make your money go further and take your trip to the next level of luxury!

If you’re travelling from the UK, cities in Europe are easy to reach so they’re a great option if you want a shorter minimoon (or pre-wedding escape) to break up the stretch of winter following Christmas. You could also combine your trip with Valentine’s Day to make it extra romantic!

If you’re not based in Europe, or you’re happy to travel further afield, there are other brilliant places you can go, too. In this list, I’ve included a mix of both winter wonderlands and sunshine escapes, so you can find the February city break that suits you perfectly!

1 Paris, France

Average temperature in February: 2 to 8°C

Paris is one of the world’s most romantic city break destinations and February is an especially good time to visit. The city feels special at this time of year… The air’s crisp, the crowds are thinner and there’s a magical vibe that’s perfect for a romantic getaway!

Paris does cosy romance exceptionally well, making it a dream option for a February honeymoon!

One of my favourite things is wandering around the different districts, taking in the prettiest sights and scenery. You can also relax in cute and traditional cafes in Paris – they’re perfect for escaping the cold.

Another great thing about visiting Paris in February is how easy it is to explore at your own pace. You’ll be able to take in all the iconic sights without the huge crowds that you’d get in the summer.

2 Reykjavik, Iceland

Average temperature in February: -2 to 2°C

A view across the city of Reykjavik in winter with colourful buildings and grey skies

Some might disagree that Iceland is a good place to go in winter but, in my opinion, Reykjavik is one of the best city breaks in February – especially for couples wanting a romantic honeymoon!

This is a city where you’ll want to wrap up warm and prepare for shorter hours of daylight. Typically there’s only daylight between 10-5pm in February. However, if you’re dreaming of a snowy escape and the chance to see the northern lights, you’ll love Reykjavik in February!

There are loads of things you can squeeze into a short honeymoon here. Reykjavik city is a cosmopolitan setting with a cool creative vibe. But if you’re heading to Iceland, you’ll definitely want to get out of the city too, to visit places like the Blue Lagoon and Thingvellir National Park – both are magical in winter.

Reykjavik is generally much cheaper at this time of year, too, which is great because Iceland is notoriously expensive.

3 Copenhagen, Denmark

Average temperature in February: -2 to 3°C

Copenhagen is an amazing place to visit in summer but it’s also good for a romantic city break in February. This is a city that feels magical in winter and it’s a destination where you’ll have plenty of space to yourself.

Because Denmark is the country of hygge, you can also expect all the cosy vibes in Copenhagen in February. It’s the perfect place for a romantic break!

There’s lots to see and do in Copenhagen – my top choice is taking a canal tour to take in the sights. If you’re lucky, you could also visit Tivoli Gardens this month. The opening hours vary but the winter season can run till mid-February.

If you’re a foodie, Copenhagen is also an amazing choice for a February honeymoon. You’ll be able to spend your days hopping between cosy cafes and bakeries tasting all the Danish treats.

Where to stay: NH Collection Copenhagen

4 Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Average temperature in February: -1 to 7°C

Amsterdam is super pretty and is easily one of the best European city breaks in February. If you’re travelling from the UK, Amsterdam is easy to get to by plane or train (it’s only 4 hours from London).

Amsterdam is just as amazing to visit in winter as it is in summer. If you want culture on your honeymoon, there are brilliant museums (like the Anne Frank House, Van Gogh Museum and Rijksmuseum) that you can visit to escape the cold.

You’ll also be able to visit the Red Light District, take a canal cruise and try all the amazing Dutch food. If you have a sweet tooth, the pancakes (pannenkoeken) and stroopwafels are famous in Amsterdam. There’s also a chocolate festival in February!

One of my favourite things about Amsterdam is that it’s walkable and feels relaxing. It’s easy to navigate the city and the canals are super pretty. It’s a lovely choice for couples who want to take in the scenery and go at a slower pace.

5 London, England

Average temperature in February: 3 to 10°C

I might be biased because I used to live there, but London is easily one of the best cities in the world. It has SO many things to see and do and is somewhere you could visit a hundred times and still never be bored.

As a city that’s great throughout the year, it’s a good choice for a February city break or winter honeymoon. This is a time when the city feels a little calmer and quieter – you’ll be able to explore the top spots without as many long lines or crowds. February also brings fun events to the city like Chinese New Year celebrations.

There’s a huge number of famous attractions in London, so there’s something for every interest and honeymoon style. Plus, there are loads of indoor things to do if the weather’s bad – from visiting museums and galleries to shopping or catching a West End show.

There’s a lot to love about Norway. This is a country that has some of the world’s most beautiful scenery and one of the best places to see it is Bergen.

Bergen is a super pretty city that’s great for an outdoorsy honeymoon or city break in February. It’s surrounded by mountains and the beautiful Norwegian Fjords. The best part is you can visit the fjords and make the most of the scenery even in winter!

Within the city, there’s plenty to do in Bergen. Bryggen is the most famous area and is a lovely setting for a winter wander. It’s also a city that’s good for culture. It’s an artsy and creative destination with street art and murals dotted around the city.

The nightlife is also great in Bergen so it’s ideal if you love trendy bars and restaurants and want to celebrate on your honeymoon.

Venice is one of my favourite places in Europe and it’s a brilliant choice for a honeymoon or a romantic winter getaway. Not only is the city a little quieter and calmer in February, but the cold winter days make the canals seem even prettier and more magical.

As a city that epitomises romance, Venice is one of the best city breaks for honeymooners… it’s also a perfect destination to spend Valentine’s Day! During a short city break to Venice, you’ll be able to spend your time exploring, taking a gondola cruise and eating all the best food.

Prague is a winter fairytale city and a perfect choice for a cosy couples escape. A lot of people visit Prague for its Christmas markets, but February is still a great time to visit.

It might be one of the city’s coldest months, but there’s still so much to love about visiting at this time of year! The best part is that February has a lot fewer tourists than other months – so it’s great if you’re after a quieter break.

It’s also a month with things to see and do. The city’s Bohemian Carnival usually takes place around the end of February. You’ll also find food, arts and fun festivals happening throughout the month.

I’m not generally a huge fan of cities but I absolutely LOVE Prague. It’s a gorgeous, walkable city that’s so pretty at every turn. If you want a charming winter escape – this is a brilliant choice.

Finnish Lapland is usually considered a Christmas destination but it’s absolutely magical in February and had to be included in this list!

Rovaniemi isn’t a typical city break. Rovaniemi itself is an urban city – it’s known for being the gateway to the Arctic Circle, as well as home to Santa Claus Village. It also has museums and exhibits as well as bars and restaurants.

However, a lot of your time will be spent away from the city. It’s a destination that’s surrounded by nature and February is one of the best months for getting magical blankets of snow… not many places are more romantic!

You’ll be able to spend your time enjoying activities like husky sledding, snowshoeing and chasing the northern lights. It’s definitely one of the best city breaks in February for an unforgettable winter honeymoon!

Where to stay: Arctic TreeHouse Hotel

11 Rome, Italy

Average temperature in February: 4 to 14°C

Roman ruins in the city of Rome

Italy is known for being a busy destination so if you want to avoid some of the crowds, Rome can be an amazing choice for a short break in February.

The weather will be cooler so it won’t be the best for alfresco dinners or sipping Aperol on a sunny rooftop. BUT, trust me Rome is still worth it. This is a unique and romantic city that’s so interesting to explore.

In February, temperatures can be around 14ºC in the day so it’s ideal for visiting all the iconic sites like the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Vatican City. Strolling through charming piazzas or getting lost in the pretty city streets also feels extra special in the quieter winter months!

Where to stay: The Hoxton, Rome

The city itself is rich in history and filled with fairytale architecture – it’s my favourite city in Spain! I also love the tapas bars and lively flamenco shows in Seville, it’s a really fun destination to visit.

There are lots of beautiful landmarks and things to take in around the city like Real Alcázar and Plaza de España. You’ll also find fewer crowds this month so it’s a much better time to explore.

Not only will you get better value rates on hotels and flights, but snowy New York is amazing to experience. I’ve visited New York in February and had the best time exploring!

There’s so much to love about New York. It’s one of the best cities in the world and is an amazing choice for honeymooners who want luxury and a vibey atmosphere.

There’s so much to see and do in New York and February is a brilliant time to visit if you want fewer crowds. There are also lots of indoor activities if you’re worried about the cold – from shopping and visiting museums to heading to a Broadway show.

February is one of the cooler months in Marrakech but it’s an amazing place to go at this time. The weather is better than the unbearable summer heat (so it’s comfortable to dress conservatively!) and you’ll likely get sunshine for exploring the sights

The city has so much to fall in love with in February, too. You’ll find stunning palaces like the Bahia Palace and the beautiful Jardin Majorelle. You’ll also be able to lose yourself in the maze of the Medina, soaking up the sights and sounds of the markets.

With fewer tourists, you’ll have a more relaxed experience and often better prices for luxury hotels. It’s also a good month for taking a day trip to the desert when the temperatures are a lot safer.

I love that you can stay in cute Riads in Marrakech, too – they’re a romantic choice for honeymooners.
