Are you looking for the best city breaks in February? Or wondering where’s best to travel at this time of year? February might not seem like the best time for a city break, but across Europe and further afield there are some amazing choices.
In fact, February is one of my favourite times for a vacation!
So, if you want inspiration and help planning your next adventure, keep reading for my list of some of the best city breaks to take in February…
Why take a city break in February
If you choose a city break in Europe in February you’ll find yourself in a winter wonderland – think snowy vistas, glorious cosy nights and rich, warming drinks to help keep you toasty.
And if you’re travelling from the UK, these cities are easy to reach so they’re a great option if you want a short getaway to break up the stretch of winter following Christmas.
Better still, many of these destinations are significantly cheaper in winter. It really is a win if you want to travel on a budget or stay in luxury accommodation at a fraction of the price!
Plus, with Valentine’s Day in February, you’ll be spoilt for choice if you want to plan a romantic trip.
Winter city breaks don’t have to be limited to Europe either. If you want to travel further afield, there are lovely options away from the continent for a city break in February.

Best city breaks in February
1 Paris, France
Average temperature in February: 2 to 8°C
Paris is one of the world’s best city break destinations. Even if you’ve visited before, the magic of Paris never gets old. And if you’re dreaming of a romantic Valentine’s escape, Paris is an obvious choice for a city break in February.
There’s so much to see and do in Paris, that you definitely won’t be bored. It’s also a city that caters to different travel styles and interests.
One of my favourite things to do in Paris is wander the different districts, taking in some of the more unusual sights. But if you want to see the main attractions, there’s plenty to keep you entertained.
You can still enjoy the traditional Parisian cafes in winter, too. Many have outdoor terraces where you can watch the world go by under heaters with a coffee or croissant in hand. It’s the perfect way to spend a Parisian vacation!
2 Reykjavik, Iceland
Average temperature in February: -2 to 2°C
Some might disagree that Iceland is a good place to go in winter but, in my opinion, Reykjavik is one of the best city breaks in February!
Of course, this is a city where you’ll want to wrap up warm – and be prepared for shorter hours of daylight. Typically there’s only daylight between 10-5pm in February.
However, if you’re dreaming of a snowy escape and the chance to glimpse the northern lights, Reykjavik in February is a must. Reykjavik is generally much cheaper at this time of year, too – although, keep in mind that, as a country, Iceland can still be notoriously expensive.
If you want to head out of the city, you’ll want to plan in advance to make the most of the county’s limited winter daylight.
You’ll want to visit the Blue Lagoon and Thingvellir National Park – both are great in winter. And you’ll definitely want to plan a trip to see the northern lights.
Within Reykjavik city itself, you’ll find a charming, cosmopolitan setting with a cool creative vibe.
3 Copenhagen, Denmark
Average temperature in February: -2 to 3°C
There’s been a lot of buzz around Copenhagen in recent years. It’s an amazing place to visit in the summer but it makes one of the best city breaks in winter, too!
Denmark is the country of hygge, so in winter you’ll get all the cosy hygge vibes in Copenhagen. It feels really magical in winter and you’ll also have lots of space to yourself to make the most of it – it’s the perfect place for a relaxing city break.
If you’re a foodie, Copenhagen is also a must. You’ll be able to spend your days hopping between cafes and bakeries sampling the best Danish pastries and treats. You could probably spend your entire city break feasting on the options!
Away from food, there’s loads to enjoy in Copenhagen. You’ll want to take a canal tour and also visit Nyhavn – it’s the city’s iconic waterfront district.
Plus, there’s Copenhagen Botanical Garden, Rosenborg Palace and Tivoli Gardens – the opening hours vary but the winter season can run till mid-February.
4 Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Average temperature in February: -1 to 7°C
Similarly to Paris, Amsterdam is a favourite with Brits and has to be one of the best European city breaks in February.
If you’re travelling from the UK, Amsterdam is super easy (and cheap!) to travel to. And, if you’re conscious about plane travel, Amsterdam is a good city to reach by train – from London, you can catch the Eurostar and arrive in 4 hours.
It’s no surprise that so many people love Amsterdam. There’s so much on offer here, and as one of the best city breaks in February, this city is no less dazzling in winter. You might even see some unique sights – like people ice skating across a frozen canal!
Amsterdam is an amazing city for a culture fix. There’s an abundance of museums you can visit if you want to escape the cold. The Anne Frank and Van Gogh museums are definite highlights.
The Red Light District is also a famous visit. Plus, shopping is great in Amsterdam too – check out Negen Straatjes which is filled with boutiques and vintage stores.
If you’re planning a romantic Valentine’s break, you might want to consider a canal cruise to take in the sights.
Plus, you’ll want to enjoy all the delicious Dutch food. If you have a sweet tooth, the pancakes (pannenkoeken) and stroopwafels are famous in Amsterdam. There’s also a chocolate festival in February!
5 New York, USA
Average temperature in February: -2 to 6°C
If you fancy a holiday away from Europe, New York could be the best city break in February for you! February is the low season in New York, but it’s still well worth visiting at this time.
Not only will you get cheaper rates on hotels and flights, but snowy New York is amazing to experience. I visited in February for my birthday and had the best time exploring the city.
There are loads of indoor activities in New York if you’re worried about the freezing temperatures. Whether you spend your days shopping, visiting museums or heading to a Broadway show, New York is a winner in winter.
You obviously can’t miss the opportunity to head up the Empire State Building while you’re there either – we went near midnight to see the city lights. You can also climb to the Top of the Rock where you’ll get amazing views of the Empire State.
A winter city break to New York is great for foodies too. There are iconic spots like Katz’s Deli and Ellen’s Stardust Diner. You’ll also find the best bagels, tasty pizza slices and cool brunch spots and bars that are perfect for escaping the cold.
6 Bergen, Norway
Average temperature in February: 0 to 3°C
There’s a lot to love about Norway. This is a country that boasts some of the world’s most spectacular scenery – and one of the best places to witness it is Bergen.
A truly picturesque city, Bergen is filled with colourful architecture and gorgeous mountain views.
Bergen is situated in the west of the country and is a great choice for a city break in February. Within the city, there’s lots to explore. Bryggen is the most famous area and is a beautiful setting for a winter wander.
There’s also plenty to enjoy in terms of culture. As an artsy and creative destination, you’ll be able to take in street art and murals dotted around the city. Plus, the nightlife is great in Bergen so it’s ideal if you’re looking to enjoy some trendy bars and restaurants.
If you love nature and winter wilderness, Bergen is a perfect city break – it’s surrounded by mountains and the breathtaking Norwegian Fjords. Even in winter, there are tours and cruises from the harbour to experience the beautiful fjords of Western Norway.
7 Venice, Italy

Need even more reason to visit Italy? You’re in luck because Venice is another of my best winter city breaks in February! Even though Italy is a great year-round destination, in February there’s lots of extra charm in Venice.
Not only is this usually bustling city a little quieter and calmer, but the cold winter days make Venice’s grand canals feel even more mystical and picturesque.
If you’re after a romantic getaway, Venice ticks the right boxes. As a city that epitomises romance, Venice is one of the best places to spend Valentine’s Day.
This car-free city offers a laid-back and romantic break that’s bursting with magic. You’ll be able to spend your days wandering the winding alleyways, taking a gondola cruise and making the most of the ridiculously good food.
The Carnival of Venice takes place in February too. If you want to experience something unique, this is an amazing opportunity to see some of the most spectacular Venetian costumes and masks.
8 Prague, Czechia
Average temperature in February: -3 to 3°C
Winters in Prague probably bring to mind images of Christmas markets, but February is still a great time to visit.
As one of the coldest months in Prague, this is a city break you’ll need to wrap up for – but don’t let that put you off. There’s so much about Prague that you’ll love in February!
February has fewer tourists than other months – which, given the swarms in summer, offers respite if you’re looking for a quieter break.
Despite this, there are several events in February that are worth adding to your itinerary. The city’s Bohemian Carnival is a vibrant celebration that takes place at the end of February. You’ll also find food, arts and fun family festivals happening during the month.
If you’re wanting to celebrate Valentine’s Day, this is another destination that boasts romantic river cruises.
You’ll also find that February is a good month for foodies. You’ll find a mix of traditional and international cuisine – consider a food tour if you want to taste all the treats.
9 Rovaniemi, Finland
Average temperature in February: -15 to -8°C
Finnish Lapland is one of those places on a lot of people’s bucket lists. Even though it’s a super remote corner of the world – Rovaniemi definitely needs to be on your list for 2024 and beyond.
Most people think to visit Rovaniemi and Lapland for Christmas, but in February it’s still a magical wonderland.
February is one of the best times for getting blankets of snow and you’ll be able to enjoy so much – from husky sledding and snowshoeing to chasing the northern lights.
It might not be your typical city break, but Rovaniemi itself is an urban city – it’s known for being the gateway to the Arctic Circle, as well as home to Santa Claus Village.
Surrounded by nature and some of the world’s most surreal landscapes, this is definitely one of the best city breaks in February for an unforgettable winter vacation!
As expected, most of the attractions here are outdoors, but within the city itself, there are also museums, exhibits and great bars and restaurants to enjoy.
10 Dubai, United Arab Emirates
Average temperature in February: 15 to 25°C
If you’re dreaming of winter sun, Dubai has to be one of the best city breaks in February.
Despite only being 7 hours from the UK, Dubai is a world away from the snowy climates of Europe. And with regular direct flights, it’s a great choice for Brits wanting a quick and easy escape from the cold!
The city is known for its distinctive skyscrapers, golden sands and its gateway to the desert. Shoppers will love the stylish malls in Dubai, plus there’s an abundance of eateries and cool bars to while away the time.
You’ll be able to top up the tan while you’re there, too – the city’s Jumeirah Beach is iconic and you can bask in the Arabian sun in February.
This is a city that’s all about luxury so it’s an amazing choice if you want to splash out on a ritzy hotel.
And if you want to venture away from the city, you can take day trips to the desert for dune bashing and camel riding. You could even stay overnight in a desert camp for a unique experience.
