Planning a trip and want to know when’s best to visit Fiji? If you want a breakdown of Fiji’s weather by month, you’re in the right place!
When I first visited Fiji I didn’t consider the climate… I just assumed it would be sunny and hot all year (luckily, my random dates happened to be in the peak season!) But while it is hot year-round – there are variations in what you can expect.
So if you’re thinking about heading to Fiji, it’s worth knowing Fiji’s weather by month! As a tropical country, Fiji has a wet and a dry season – so finding the best months to visit will help you prepare for your trip and have the best time possible!
Fiji climate and average weather
Fiji is a tropical South Pacific country which means that high temperatures are pretty consistent year-round. So if you don’t like the cold, you don’t have to worry!
Over the course of the year, temperatures rarely drop below 20ºC (and this is usually at night). During the day, you can normally expect it to be in the mid-high 20ºCs.
The summer months (November to April) are hottest in Fiji and this is when rainfall and humidity are higher. Winter is drier and cooler and is considered the best time to visit. I travelled around Fiji in July which is one of the “coldest” months but it was still hot, sunny and perfect for island life!
What is the wet season in Fiji like?
It can rain throughout the year in Fiji but most rainfall happens in the wet, summer season, which is between November and April. That said – it’s unlikely to rain all day during the wetter months… so if that’s the only date you can travel, it’s still possible to have a great trip!
March is typically Fiji’s wettest month – there can be around 200-350 mm of rainfall per month in the wet season. July is the driest with rainfall of around 50mm in some parts.
When I was there in July (in the dry season), it was dry and sunny every day but we did have a tropical thunderstorm with a short heavy shower one evening.
If you visit in the wet season, it’s likely you’ll get brief and heavy afternoon showers along with some thunderstorms. It’s impossible to predict the weather exactly, so you could be unlucky with more rain throughout the day, but there’s also a chance of lovely sunny days, too!
The rainfall can also vary across Fiji. Fiji’s eastern side and mountainous areas are usually wetter than the western ‘dry zone’. It doesn’t guarantee it’ll be completely dry, but Fiji’s smaller islands (like the Mamanucas and Yasawas in the northwest) generally get less rain.
Average temperatures in Fiji
Temperatures are warm year-round in Fiji and only change a little bit between the summer and winter seasons.
The hottest time to visit Fiji is between December and March when temperatures reach highs of 31ºC. It’s cooler between June and September when it’s Fiji’s winter season. Usually, daytime temperatures are around 26-28ºC but it can go up or down.
Sea temperatures in Fiji
What I loved when I visited Fiji was the sea temperature – it was so warm! Typically, the sea is always 26-29ºC in Fiji. To put that in perspective, the water in Cornwall (UK) in the height of summer is around 16-17ºC!
Fiji weather by month
Ok, let’s get into it. Here’s a breakdown of Fiji weather by month – what you can expect, daily average temperatures, rainfall and other things to consider!
Fiji wet season weather (November – April)
Fiji weather in November
November is the beginning of the wet season in Fiji and is a month with increased humidity and rainfall. Showers are frequent this month, but they’re mostly towards the mid-end of the month.
You’ll likely still get dry spells and bright sunshine if you travel in November and the sea is beautifully warm. You’ll also find that November is quieter in terms of tourism.
☀️ Average daytime temperature: 30°C
Average rainfall: 201 mm / 15 days
Fiji weather in December
December is in the midst of the wet season, with high humidity and more frequent and intense rain showers. The risk of cyclones also increases, so monitoring weather updates is important if you choose to travel at this time of year!
Despite the rain, there are still sunny intervals in December so you should be able to enjoy the beaches. It’s also a generally quiet month (apart from over the holiday season).
If you’re planning a Christmas or New Year’s trip, you’ll need to book in advance as resorts fill up with families.
☀️ Average daytime temperature: 31°C
Average rainfall: 211 mm / 17 days
Fiji weather in January
January is still in Fiji’s wet, summer season so it’s a month with high temperatures, frequent heavy showers and a lot of humidity. Some parts of the country, especially the bigger islands and eastern areas, can experience a lot of rainfall in January.
That said, there can still be clear spells in January. However, it’s a month with an increased risk of cyclones so it’s worth keeping this in mind if you’re planning a trip.
☀️ Average daytime temperature: 31°C
Average rainfall: 307 mm / 20 days
Fiji weather in February
February is one of the wettest months in Fiji so it’s not the most popular time to visit. Humidity can make it feel uncomfortable and rainfall could stop some of your plans.
However, even though it’s the peak rainy season, it’s still possible to have some sunny days in February. If you don’t mind being flexible and preparing for some rain, it could be a good time to visit when it’s a little quieter!
☀️ Average daytime temperature: 31°C
Average rainfall: 295 mm / 20 days
Fiji weather in March
March in Fiji is still part of the wet season with high humidity and frequent rain showers. It’s a particularly wet month with heavy showers and rain most days. You’ll still be able to enjoy the beach between bursts but you’ll have to be flexible and realistic with your expectations this month.
Cyclones remain a potential threat in March, too. Obviously, weather is impossible to fully predict so if you want to visit this month you could still get plenty of sunshine! Plus, you’ll find it’s much quieter and cheaper than the peak months.
☀️ Average daytime temperature: 31°C
Average rainfall: 348 mm / 21 days
Fiji weather in April
April is the last of the wet months in Fiji and marks the transition into winter. Rainfall starts to decrease although short showers are still common.
April is considered more of a shoulder month in Fiji. It could be a good time to visit before the peak tourist season if you want lower prices and fewer people at your resort.
☀️ Average daytime temperature: 30°C
Average rainfall: 276 mm / 17 days
Fiji dry season weather (May – October)
Fiji weather in May
In May, the dry season has arrived! This is when rainfall starts to reduce and you’ll find the humidity is a little lower than the preceding months. The South Pacific cyclone season ends in April so there’s a much smaller chance of tropical storms in May, too.
Temperatures are still hot but can start to feel a little “cooler” especially in the evenings. It’s a fab time to visit if you want hot sunny days before the peak tourist rush.
☀️ Average daytime temperature: 29°C
Average rainfall: 172 mm / 13 days
Fiji weather in June
June is one of the best months to visit Fiji. It’s firmly in the dry season and is characterised by minimal rainfall, low humidity and lovely warm temperatures.
With near-perfect weather, it’s a great month for all of Fiji’s best activities, like sunbathing, boat trips and swimming with manta rays! Just bear in mind that tourism picks up in Fiji in June so you’ll want to plan in advance to get availability at your chosen resort.
☀️ Average daytime temperature: 28°C
Average rainfall: 113 mm / 12 days
Fiji weather in July
July is when I visited on my first trip to Fiji and it was perfect! Even though it’s mid-winter, Fiji is hot by most people’s standards. July is also one of the driest months and humidity is lower.
This is peak tourist season with dream weather for all outdoor activities and enjoying the beaches. This does however mean that it can be a little busier.
I never found Fiji to be particularly busy but many resorts are small and can get booked up quickly. You’ll want to book in advance if you visit in July.
☀️ Average daytime temperature: 27°C
Average rainfall: 94mm / 11 days
Fiji weather in August
August remains cool and dry with low rainfall and humidity. It’s one of the best months to visit with ideal weather for enjoying the beaches and water activities. You’ll find the sea is calm and warm with great visibility for snorkelling and diving.
As a perfect month to explore Fiji, it can get busy and prices can be higher. With higher tourist numbers, it’s a good idea to book resorts in advance if you’re travelling in August.
☀️ Average daytime temperature: 27°C
Average rainfall: 108 mm / 11 days
Fiji weather in September
It’s still the dry season in Fiji in September. Rainfall remains low but you can find that humidity starts to creep up this month which makes it feel a little hotter.
The weather in September is ideal for beach activities, watersports and exploring the islands.
☀️ Average daytime temperature: 28°C
Average rainfall: 130 mm / 16 days
Fiji weather in October
October is a shoulder month at the end of the dry season, but it’s still a great time to visit. You will find that humidity and rainfall start increasing – especially towards the end of the month – but there’s a good balance between the dry and upcoming wet seasons.
Water activities and many of the best things to do in Fiji are also still great this month!
☀️ Average daytime temperature: 29°C
Average rainfall: 168 mm / 14 days
What is the best month to visit Fiji?
The best time to visit Fiji is in the winter dry season – from May to October. This is when you’ll get warm weather and perfect water visibility. There’s also less rainfall at this time, which means plenty of sunshine and more chance to enjoy everything there is to offer.
During these months, you can also experience bucket-list activities in Fiji like swimming with manta rays in the Yasawa Islands! It’s also the ideal time for island hopping, excursions or simply relaxing on the beach.
