As a tropical destination, Bali is prone to rain. So if you’ve booked a trip and found yourself wondering what you can do if it rains – I’ve got you covered with this post!

I visited Bali during the rainy season and the weather didn’t ruin the trip. There was some heavy rain, but we still had an amazing time and did everything we had planned.

Admittedly, a lot of Bali’s main attractions are outdoors, but rain doesn’t mean you’ll have a rubbish time. If you’re flexible and embrace the elements, I promise it can still be a dream getaway!

So whether you’re currently on the island or you want to be prepared with things to do in Bali when it rains, you’re in the right place!

When is the rainy season in Bali?

The Bali rainy season runs from October to April. Technically, these are the worst months to visit Bali when you’ll likely experience heavy rain at some point during your stay. However, travelling at this time usually means better rates and fewer crowds!

1 Have a spa day

Love a spa day as much as I do?! One of my favourite things about Bali is its incredible spa offering so it had to be first on the list of things to do in Bali when it rains. (Even if it’s not raining – visiting a spa at least once during your trip is an absolute must!)

There are so many gorgeous spas and resorts across the island where you can have traditional Balinese massages, flower baths and treatments like facials or manicures. If it’s raining, it’s the PERFECT excuse to indulge in the best treats.

2 Relax at a cafe

Cafe culture is huge in Bali so if you need to escape the rain, you won’t be far from a cute spot where you can take time out. Cafe hopping is so much fun and if you’re a foodie, you’ll be in heaven in Bali!

Bali is known for its aesthetic coffee shops and healthy places for brunch, smoothie bowls and vegan eats. Some fav cafes to check out for a rainy day include Kynd Community, The Avocado Factory and Copenhagen Canggu.

3 Go shopping

Shopping in Bali is an amazing idea when it rains and there are brilliant places you could go. Seminyak is one of the best places and is known for its trendy boutiques.

If you want to escape the weather, you could also head to one of Bali’s malls like Seminyak Village or Beachwalk Shopping Center in Kuta.

Many of Bali’s shopping areas are modern (and often air-conditioned!) and have everything you need for a rainy day’s shopping. It’s a perfect opportunity to treat yourself to something or to buy gifts and souvenirs.

4 Do some yoga

As a destination with a big focus on wellness, a yoga class is a must when it rains in Bali. You’ll find tons of great yoga and wellness studios where you can join a class when it’s wet outdoors.

The Yoga Barn in Ubud is a popular place that we went to. It’s also where you can do other wellness activities like meditation, sound healing and breathwork classes.

Depending on where you’re staying, you might also find that your resort has yoga classes that you can take part in during the day.

5 Join a jewellery or crafts workshop

From silver jewellery making workshops to pottery or a Batik fabric class, there are so many great ways to entertain yourself during the Bali rain!

Not only is it a way to pass the time, but these classes are so much fun. You’ll learn about traditions, get creative and earn a memento from it, too.

6 Visit museums + galleries

If you want a culture fix, visiting Bali’s museums and galleries is a good way to spend time during a downpour. There are lots of options you could explore including Nyaman Art Gallery, which was the first international contemporary art gallery in Bali.

The Agung Rai Museum of Art (ARMA) and Puri Lukisan Museum are great if you want to take in Balinese art and culture. Other options include the Blanco Renaissance Museum, Museum Rudana, Neka Art Museum and Ubud Diary

7 Join a cooking class

I never got around to a cooking class when I was in Bali but I’ve joined them in other destinations and they’re a great way to learn a little more about the culture.

In Bali, you can take part in traditional cooking classes where you’ll make a choice of Indonesian dishes. This private, family-run option (which you can book on Viator), looks like a lovely way to spend some time.

8 Watch a traditional performance

Another top cultural experience in Bali is to see a traditional performance. If it’s raining, you’ll want to check out the Bali Agung Show at Bali Safari Park or the Devdan Show at Nusa Dua Theatre.

The Devdan Show is a highly-rated performance with amazing costumes, dancing, acrobatics and illusions. It’s also in a modern, air-conditioned theatre so it’s the perfect place to escape the rain and humidity.

9 Head to a waterpark

I’m definitely a kid at heart and I love a good waterpark! If the day’s looking a little rainy and it’s safe to be in the water (e.g. no thunderstorms), why not head to a waterpark?

There are a few waterparks on Bali island including Waterbom Bali and Splash Water Park. Waterbom is known as Asia’s best waterpark so it’s my recommendation. The park follows strict safety standards and you’ll find a range of slides and attractions.

10 Do fun indoor activities

There are plenty of fun indoor activities to add to your itinerary in Bali for when it’s raining. If you love the movies, there are cinemas in Bali like Beachwalk Cinema XXI or Paradiso Ubud.

You could also go to an escape room like Pandora Experience Escape Room Bali or visit Trans Studio indoor theme park or Upside Down World. I didn’t go to the one in Bali, but I went to an upside down museum in Malaysia and it was so much fun!

11 Chase waterfalls

Bali is known for having the most beautiful waterfalls and lush landscapes which are even more impressive in the wet season.

You’ll need to take care visiting waterfalls in the rain, especially if there’s a hike involved to get there. But, seeing the waterfalls when they’re full and flowing will be stunning.

If you’re worried about safety, you can hire a local guide which can help to put you at ease. Likewise, going in the water might not be safe during heavy rains, but it doesn’t mean you can’t still admire the beauty.

12 Go to the gym

Not everyone wants to workout while they’re away, but it’s something I love and it’s a fab opportunity for self-care while it’s raining!

If your resort has a gym, you can obviously go there. But there are also loads of classes you can join across Bali, too – whether that’s pilates and dance or CrossFit, HIIT and strength classes that get your body moving.

Lots of places offer drop-in classes and passes to make the most of the facilities.

13 Try white water rafting

Apparently white water rafting is still great with a little rain so this is a fab option to try during the wet season. If you’re an adrenaline lover, you’ll find a few spots in Bali – including the Ayung River near Ubud, Telaga Waja River and the Melangit River.

If the weather is torrential, it might get cancelled, but if it’s safe to take part it’s a great thing to do when you’ll be getting wet anyway!

14 Relax at a beach club

Bali has amazing beach clubs and many of them have covered areas with comfy seating. So even if it’s raining, they’re the perfect place to relax with good music and a cocktail overlooking the ocean.

Some popular beach clubs to check out in Bali include Finns, Sundays Beach Club and Azul Beach Club.

15 Rest at your resort or villa

One of the best things about Bali is its luxury accommodation. It’s an amazing destination for luxury resorts and villas and you’ll often find options that are a lot more affordable than elsewhere.

If you’re staying in beautiful accommodation, it’s therefore not a bad place to spend a rainy day! You’ll find that many villas and resorts have covered indoor-outdoor spaces and gorgeous rooms where you can relax with a drink or a good book.

Does Bali have a rainy season?

Yes, Bali’s rainy or wet season is from October to April. This is when the island sees most of its rain and is not as popular for tourism.

Is it worth visiting Bali in the wet season?

Even though the rainy months in Bali aren’t the best time to travel, it’s still worth considering if it’s the only time you can visit. The weather in Bali can be unpredictable but it’s still possible to have nice (yet humid) weather during the wet season.

If you’re happy to go with the flow, travelling to Bali in the wet season means you’ll also find low-season discounts and fewer tourists.

Which month is best to visit Bali?

May to September is considered the best or peak time to visit Bali. This is the island’s dry season where you’re more likely to have bright sunny weather and less rain. This does however mean that you’ll find higher prices and a lot more crowds in the main tourist spots.

What is the rainiest month in Bali?

January is usually the rainiest month in Bali, followed by December and February. During these months, there can be 280 to 350 mm of rainfall.

Does it rain the whole day in Bali?

Rain can be heavy during the Bali wet season but it doesn’t always last all day. Often, you’ll get rain followed by clearer weather. Obviously, it’s unpredictable, but when I visited we had torrential downpours as well as sunny weather and it never rained all day!

Rainy days in Bali – Final thoughts

Just because it’s raining in Bali, doesn’t mean you can’t have a great time. Across the island there are loads of things to do to avoid the rainstorms – from amazing spa treatments and yoga classes to workshops, cultural attractions and fun indoor activities.

I know that we all want the sunniest weather when we’re away, but I still enjoyed Bali in the rainy season and you can, too! I hope this post has given you ideas and inspiration for what to do in Bali if it rains!
